Temasek Polytechnic

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

General Information
Objectives

§  To enable final year students to gain valuable work experience in relevant industries.

§  To provide companies with the opportunity to assess the quality of our students.

Allowance

CCM, LRM and HTM students: a minimum monthly take-home allowance of $500.

All other students: a minimum monthly take-home allowance of $450.

Many employers provide an allowance which is above this minimum amount. Overtime pay is payable for work beyond 44 hours per week and CPF is payable at employers’ discretion.

Work Permit

Foreign students are exempted from work permit requirements.

Company Supervisor

Students will only receive instruction and guidance directly from their reporting companies. The company must assign at least a supervisor to oversee the performance and progress of the student.

Liaison Officer

A lecturer appointed to oversee the students attached to the company, shall serve as the Liaison Officer. Queries and clarifications can be directed to the Liaison Officer.

Training Programme (including orientation)

Employers are requested to submit a training programme which will be evaluated on its suitability. The scope of training can cover projects and/or job responsibilities in the areas listed in the application form. Should the programme be changed, employers are requested to inform the Liaison Officer as soon as possible.

Student Attendance & Schedule of Work

Students should not be required to work beyond 11pm, where possible. Student attendance must be recorded daily by the employers. Students are not allowed to take leave except for compassionate and medical leave which must be approved by both the Employer and the Polytechnic. The students must provide supporting documents for leave. If students take more than 3 - 5 days of medical leave (depending on the duration of their SIP), employers may deduct their pay or extend their SIP to make up for the medical leave taken.

Insurance

Students are covered under the Polytechnic’s insurance policy.

Overseas Assignment

Employers who require students to work outside Singapore should preferably inform the Liaison Officer at least 2-3 weeks before the assignment to enable the Polytechnic to obtain parental consent and the necessary indemnities. Employers are required to take an insurance policy to cover the period of the trip.

Submission by Students

Students are required to complete a written report or portfolio detailing their experience in the organisation at the end of the SIP period.

Performance Appraisal

Employers are required to complete a performance appraisal on each student based on their work in the organisation. Employers are encouraged to review the performance appraisal with the students.

Company Feedback

At the end of the attachment period, employers are requested to complete the SIP Feedback form.

On-Campus Sessions

Students are required to attend on-campus sessions on the following Saturdays. As this forms part of their assessment, employers are requested to allow students time-off on working Saturdays to attend these sessions.
