News from the Reading Room October 5, 2017
Greetings! Thank you to all of you who were able to stop by and say hello during parent-teacher conferences this week. It was a pleasure meeting you and I look forward to working with you and your student this year. Also, I deeply appreciate your quick responses returning the Title 1 parent permission slips and the parent, student, teacher compacts. If you have not turned these forms in, and need another copy, please let me know. This week in the reading room, students practiced reading site words and or using Tucker signing. Each skill was addressed at different rates according to grade level. Tucker signing is another strategy to assist students in decoding words as they read. Please ask your student to demonstrate the letters and sounds they practiced this week.  Following are the Illinois State Standards and activities each grade worked on throughout the week.

Kindergarten: RF.k.1D Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Students practiced identifying letters and associating sounds. I have attached alphabet flash cards for students to practice at home. I encourage you to start with only 3 or 4 cards. Have your student name the letter and tell you what sound the letter makes. If the student is unsure, please have him/her use thebeginning sound of the picture on the card for a clue. Continue to add a few more flashcards as mastery of the letters is achieved. Practicing a few letters for 3-5 minutes a few times a day will really help your student memorize those letters and their sounds. Once we have that skill accomplished, we can put those sounds together to make words! 

First Grade:RF.1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words.

Students practiced reading phonemes and putting them together to make words. They practiced reading Intensive Phonics Commonly Used Words (Chart 1). They also played a game with Dolch’s 1st grade list of words using flashcards. These words are commonly used in all text. A bag of these flashcards have been attached so students may practice these words at home. Please start with only a few cards at a time. Add more words as your student learns the previous ones. Practicing these words 5-7 minutes a few times each day, will increase students’ reading fluency (reading words correctly, smoothly, and with expression). Students also used Orton-Gillinham based activities to review short vowel sounds. To increase vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, students read and discussed the short story, Ant and Grasshopper. I hope you and your student get the opportunity to read it together this weekend. (over)

Second Grade:RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Students reviewed short and long vowel sounds and reading the r-controlled vowel “ar”. They practiced reading Intensive Phonics Commonly Used Words chart 1 and 2. Students were introduced to prefixes and suffixes. The groups worked on fluency (reading words correctly, smoothly, and with expression), visualizing, vocabulary, and comprehension by reading and discussing the nonfiction article, Many Kinds of Dogs. They applied their knowledge of suffixes and were able to identify and define the word “playful” in the article. I encourage you and your student to reread the article together and talk about your favorite kind of dog. I m sending home a packet of Dolch’s 2nd grade list of words flashcards. Please start with five to 10 cards. When these are mastered, add 2 or 3 more to the pile. Practicing these words 8-10 minutes a few times each day, will strengthen students’ ability to recall these site words quickly and effortlessly.

Thank you for a wonderful first week with your student! May you enjoy the love of reading with your studenttoday and every day!! 
