This is a full-time 10 PA replacement post based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock

Applications are invited for the above post as Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery within the Inverclyde Royal Hospital. This post represents an exciting opportunity to support our established team of Consultants. It is expected that the successful applicants will have a high clinical profile with the drive and initiative to achieve and sustain the highest standards of care.

This is a replacement post to provide expertise in primary arthroplasty and other Lower Limb Surgeries, to complement the requirements of the department, as well as participating in the On Call Rota for Trauma at the IRH. The Consultant will be expected to provide in-patient and outpatient services mainly at the IRH, with some sessions also undertaken at peripheral hospitals such as the Vale of Leven Hospital, as part of the wider Clyde Directorate.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry at the date of interview. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training and have some experience of working in the NHS.

Hospital and General Information

The Orthopaedic Team provides orthopaedic services for the Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Situated in Greenock, approximately 40 minutes from Glasgow it provides an extensive range of acute health services to a population of around 125,000 in the urban and rural areas of Inverclyde, Largs, Bute and the Cowal Penninsula..

Inverclyde Royal Hospital first opened in 1979. It currently has a bed complement of 395, including facilities for Care of the Elderly, Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry under the management of Inverclyde Community Health Partnership are also included on-site.

With an annual income in excess of £90 million (with £60 million being allocated to Surgery & Anaesthetics Directorate across 3 the sites in Clyde), In 07/08 the Hospital treat over 25,000 inpatients, over 91,000 outpatients and 9,400 day cases. Approximately 32,000 people were seen in Accident and Emergency. The Hospital has developed excellent links with tertiary centres in Glasgow and has a well-founded reputation for providing a high standard of medical teaching and postgraduate medical education facilities.

As part of the largest NHS Provider in the United Kingdom, practitioners based at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital provide acute services for Greenock and surrounding area along with some specialist services.

The town of Greenock situated 25 miles to the West of Glasgow. It is known worldwide for its historical contribution to the shipping industry and remains a busy port. There are excellent road and public transport links with the rest of Scotland and with the progressive upgrading of the main road route to England, journeys to locations south of the border are becoming ever easier. Glasgow Airport (average flight time to London Heathrow – one hour) is located 18 miles from the Hospital and has excellent scheduled links to the other major airports in the British Isles, Europe, Middle East and North America.

Property prices in the area are naturally dependent upon type and location. The hospital is surrounded by beautiful countryside and small villages. There are a number of excellent schools and further education facilities with Glasgow offering 3 Universities in addition to the University of Paisley.

The major specialities, based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital are Orthopaedic Surgery; Accident & Emergency; General Medicine; General Surgery and Urology; ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, midwife led Maternity Services and Care of the Elderly. Psychiatric Assessment beds are situated within the Hospital, although under a different management. Major regional specialities available in Glasgow are, Maxillofacial Surgery and Burns, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery.

The Orthopaedic Department

Within the Inverclyde Royal Hospital, there are currently 35 beds available in K North. K North is situated on K level floor and there is easy access to the main theatre area within which 1 laminar flow Orthopaedic theatre accommodates trauma and elective procedures. A second non-laminar flow theatre is used for trauma. There are currently 5 dedicated trauma sessions, 11 elective inpatients sessions and 1 day surgery sessions in the dedicated day surgery unit per week. There are also 0.5 sessions available at the Vale of Leven Hospital for 23 hour / day cases.

There is an excellent 3 bedded intensive care unit managed by the anaesthetic department and a 4 bedded high dependency unit, managed by surgical and medical specialties.

There were 858 orthopaedic elective in-patient admissions, 492 elective day case admissions and 1168 emergency admissions at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital (07/08 figures).

The Orthopaedic and Fracture clinics are conducted in a dedicated suite of rooms adjacent to the Plaster and Treatment rooms with the X-ray Department in close proximity. Multidisciplinary clinics are run jointly with the Departments of Physiotherapy, Rheumatology and Diabetology

c)Duties of the Post

(i)The appointee will participate in the receiving rota for trauma cases in a 1 in 6 rota. The department currently supports a trauma rota beginning Friday PM, finishing the following Friday lunchtime.

The successful applicant will have an interest in Lower Limb surgery in addition to contributing to routine trauma and general orthopaedic work.

(ii)Teaching

The Consultant will have responsibilities for both formal and bedside teaching.

Postgraduate teaching is organised within the hospital for Basic Surgical Trainees and on a regional basis for Higher Surgical Trainees. The Consultant will have an the opportunity to have an active role in these areas

(iii)Research Activities

There are ongoing research projects in the Unit and the Consultant will be encouraged to pursue research in his or her area of special interest. Audit meetings take place 8 times per year which the whole unit is encouraged to attend.

(iv)Administrative Duties – including those associated with care of patients and running of the department.

[e]The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his charge and for proper functioning of the Department.

This appointment is made under terms of the new consultant contract. The post attracts 10 PA’s that are distributed as follows;

This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.

Any Consultants who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.
