Red hot covers turn clichés into gold

A new local rock band is taking the area by storm – by looking back to the golden age of rock.

Vintage, a classic rock tribute act, are wowing audiences across Yorkshire with concerts packed full of hits from the 70s, played and sung just like the original versions.

Whole Lotta Love, More Than A Feeling, Since You Been Gone – from Queen to Floyd, from Hendrix to Clapton – Vintage faithfully creates the 70s rock experience.

“We’ve been amazed by the reception we’ve been getting,” says singer Richard Stephenson. "We knew that we loved this music, but it seems to have really connected with the people who come to see us. Everywhere we go, every gig we play, ends with everybody on their feet singing along and dancing their hearts out. It’s madness."

"We pride ourselves on doing the music justice,” continues guitarist Neil Smith. “We don’t just play the same chords and words; we try to faithfully recreate the sounds and solos that made these songs so timeless. Classic rock covers are often looked down upon as a cliché, but we don’t see them that way. We play the songs like they should be played and people appreciate the effort we put in."

It’s not often you hear a pub band tackle Led Zeppelin’s stop-start masterpiece Black Dog, or play a note perfect version of Dave Gilmour’s seminal solo from Comfortably Numb, or find a singer who hits the high notes in Since You Been Gone.

But it’s not just their musicianship that’s winning over the crowds – Vintage also pride themselves on delivering a show full of the raw energy that bands like Led Zeppelin and Free thrived on in the 70s.

Tim Hornsby, founder of Fibbers and the Duchess in York and luminary of the local music scene, sums it up perfectly. "It's quite rare to see classic covers performed this well and with such accuracy. You usually get sad pub rock versions with about as much fire as a fag end, but this lot burn red hot at both ends. Thoroughly recommended!"
