5For assessment, the student will choose from one of the following text types:

  • novel
  • non-fiction (eg biography, travel)
  • drama script
  • hyperfiction.

Explanatory Notes

6This standard is derived from the Level 6 Making Meaning strand [reading] and the Creating Meaning strand [writing] and related achievement objectives in the English Learning Area of The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Text[s] chosen for study should be at Curriculum Level 6 and/or have characteristics that enable students to show the expected level of understanding.

7Specified aspects will be selected from purposes and audiences, ideas (e.g character, theme, setting), language features (e.g. figurative language, syntax, style, symbolism, vocabulary), and structures (e.g. part text, whole text, narrative, beginnings and endings).

8Studied written text(s) includes New Zealand and/or world text(s).

9A written response that shows understanding will make some points relevant to the topic being addressed.

10A written response that shows convincing understanding will make coherent points which are relevant to the topic being addressed. The majority of these points will be connected to each other. There may be some unevenness in the answer

11A written response that shows perceptive understanding will make coherent points which show some insight or originality in thought or interpretation. These points will be developed and integrated

12Supporting evidence refers to specific and relevant details from the text used to support an argument.

13For assessment, the student will choose from one or more of the following text types.

  • novel
  • non-fiction
  • print media
  • drama
  • short story
  • poetry / song lyric
  • digital/online text e.g. blog, wiki, hyperfiction
