The Essentials of Mathematics Pathway

In order to meet the challenges of society, high school graduates must be numerate. Students following this pathway will have opportunities to improve their numeracy skills and concepts. Developing a sense of numeracy will help them to understand how mathematical concepts permeate daily life, business, industry, and government. Students need to be able to use mathematics not just in their work lives but also in their personal lives as citizens and consumers. It is intended that students will learn to value mathematics and become confident in their mathematical abilities.

The CABE grade 11E course is suited to students who have not obtained a math 11 credit and are unable to attend a High school. The Essentials of Mathematics 11 course content will cover, Income, Buying on Credit, Linear relationships, Measurement, Interpreting Statistical Graphs, Measures of Central Tendency, Probability, Cost of Operating a Vehicle, Income Tax, Elements of a Business Plan

Goal: Since this is likely to be the last mathematics course you take, the main goal of this course is to provide you with the concepts and skills necessary to function as a competent employee and/or consumer. This course satisfies the graduation requirements for a grade 11math course.

Note: Successful completion of this course is not sufficient for entry into most universities, university transfer programs, or technical programs.

Calculators: Use of a calculator is essential in this course. A scientific calculator capable of raising values to a power is necessary.

Work: Attend class on time prepared to do your work. Do all of the exercises assigned. Let me know immediately if you will be absent (939-4522). Date and label the top of your notebook in order to show the exercises completed each day.

Tests: Assigned Unit Questions must be passed before the Unit Test is attempted. Ask to write them when you are competent. There are 4 Module tests that cover 2 or 3 units.

Marks: A letter grade will be assigned upon the completion of the program - based upon test results. The Unit and Module tests will be averaged together.
