RECRUIT SELECTION PROCESS 2018

ORDER OF EVENTS IN THE SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process can take up to six months to complete. Applicants can be disqualified from the process for failing to pass any test or step in the process, or for being untruthful regarding any required information in the process. Applicants disqualified from the process may enter subsequent recruiting processes.

STEP 1 APPLICATION

·  Complete and return application to Woonsocket Personnel Division by: March 9, 2018.

·  $60.00 application fee

STEP 2 WRITTEN EXAMINATION

Saturday, March 24, 2018. Doors close at 8:00 am

Woonsocket Middle School (Hamlet Building)

·  Applicant must pass the written examination with a minimum score of 70

·  Arrive early for registration, bring a photo Identification

·  Attire: Professional Business formal

·  Written test will be comprised of general equivalency questions

·  The testing process can take several hours

·  Bring any documents needed to apply for additional points; you should have received information from the Personnel Division

STEP 3 PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT

Saturday, March 31, 2018 @ 8:00 am

Woonsocket High School

777 Cass Ave., Woonsocket, RI 02895

·  Applicant must successfully complete four physical assessments (1.5 mile run, 1-minute sit-ups, 1-minute push-ups, 300 meter run) according to Cooper Institute standards (available on dept website)

·  Arrive early for registration

·  Bring photo identification

·  Attire: plain white t-shirt (no markings), blue or black shorts or sweatpants, white socks, athletic footwear (no jewelry, headphones)

·  The testing process can take 4-6 hours

STEP 4 ORAL INTERVIEW

Time/place to be determined

·  Applicants who successfully complete the written exam and the physical assessment will be scheduled for an oral interview with members of the Police Department

·  Attire: Professional Business formal

STEP 5 COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

·  Applicants will complete a personal history statement and undergo a comprehensive background investigation

STEP 6 RI MUNICIPAL POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT

Time to be determined

RI Municipal Police Academy, CCRI (Lincoln)

·  Applicants must successfully pass the Academy Physical Assessment

·  The standards are the same as the Woonsocket Police Physical Assessment

STEP 7 PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION

STEP 8 MEDICAL EXAMINATION

STEP 9 FINAL INTERVIEW

SCORING AND FINAL RANKING

Applicants will be placed on a hiring list in accordance with their overall score in the hiring process. Applicants will be notified by the Personnel Division of their final ranking or if they have been disqualified from the process. The Department will select police recruits from this hiring list. The hiring list is good for at least six months, and can be extended for up to two years by order of the Public Safety Director.

An applicant’s overall score is computed as follows:

Written Test Score (70%) + Oral Board Score (30%) = Testing Score

Applicants can have a maximum of 10 additional points awarded for certain criteria:

·  Veteran status = 5 points (as defined in City Code & RIGL 36-4-19)

·  Educational - Associates Degree or 60 credits = 2 points; Bachelor’s Degree or 120 credits = 5 points

·  Woonsocket Resident = 10 points (must have proof of residency in city for previous 2 years)

·  Prior Police experience – up to 10 points, case by case evaluation of prior experience
