Purpose and Values
DCA’s purpose is to remove barriers to the personal development and social inclusion faced by children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Purpose of the position
To be a positive role model to families and provide information about your experience of a child hood with a hearing loss, and what it means to be a deaf or hard of hearing person.
To help the child and family develop positive attitudes about deafness, broaden their understanding of deafness, and knowledge of helpful strategies.
Responsibilities
▌1 –Promote a positive view of life as a deaf or hard of hearing adult to families with newly diagnosed deaf or hard of hearing babies or children
Work standard–Feedback from parents, coordinator, service providers and other mentors will indicate successful achievement of this responsibility.
▌2 –Be available and respond to each family’s needs for support and share life experiences in a non-biased manner, respecting family values, culture and communication choice
Work standard–Feedback from parents and coordinator will indicate successful achievement of this responsibility. Evidence of cooperation to meet with parents when requested and to attend training that is offered.
▌3 –Model high standards of service development, delivery and evaluation consistent with Deaf Children Australia’s Purpose and Values.
Work standard– Feedback from parents, other service providers and coordinator will indicate successful achievement of this responsibility. Also noted by attendance and input at ongoing training. Completion of required paperwork promptly and appropriately.

Work experience & skills
EssentialHave a hearing loss since childhood / Understanding of confidentiality
Aged over 18 years / Able to work occasional weekends and out of business hours
Positive and flexible attitude towards deafness and life in general / Able to provide references
Capable of delivering unbiased information (respectful of family values, culture and choice of communication method) / Current working with children check & police check
Emotionally mature / Current driver’s licence
Reliable / Able to commit to at least 12 months in this role
Able to attend and benefit from training
Desirable
Understanding of the current service network for children who are deaf or hard of hearing
