Springhouse Farm Internship Application
Springhouse Farm is a certified organic and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) farm. All interns will be required to attend a one day on-farm training to learn about our standards and get a tour of the farm. The purpose of our internship is to teach you through hands on experiencehow to run a small scale, organic farm, which is why we encourage you to work for an entire growing season. We primarily grow vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, and raise pastured pigs. We also have a small fruit tree orchard and blueberry bushes. We have high and low tunnels for season extension and a greenhouse to start our vegetable plants. Our markets include 2 CSA’s, a multi-farm CSA, farmers market, on farm produce stand, local restaurants and New Appalachia, a wholesale distributor. We host multiple farm tours and school groups, as well as seasonal farm potlucks and pig-pickins’.
Farm work is heaviest April-September, but we are able to build an internship that works for both of us. Internship begin and end dates are flexible, but a commitment is required. Full time interns (40 hours/week) will receive a stipend of $400/month and vegetables. Part time interns (20 hours/week) will receive a stipend of $200/month and vegetables. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
A typical day on the farm is from 8am-5pm, with an hour lunch break. We work rain or shine if we can get into the fields. Farm work includes: planting, seeding, weeding, fertilizing, harvesting, cleaning, packaging and delivering produce. Livestock maintenance includes: feeding/watering, picking up food compost from different stores, fence maintenance, planting forage crops and rotating livestock through different fields.

Different types of internships: Student internships are for university credit and unpaid, a gas stipend is available for student interns working 20 hours or more each week. Part time internships are 20 hours a week (we come up with a schedule that works for both of us) and are paid $200/month. Full time internships are 40 hours a week and are paid $400/month. Volunteer internships are generally people who can't commit to being on the farm a lot due to work or school schedules. In this situation, we sit down and arrange a schedule that works for both of us. A gas stipend is available for volunteer interns working 20 hours or more each week. The most important thing is commitment. Whether it's two days or four days a week, whether it's helping in the fields, with livestock, or at market, the most important thing is consistency.Preference is given to interns who can commit to a minimum of two months.
