A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE DREHER HIGH SCHOOL “DEVILS” OF COLUMBIA AND THEIR COACH, DANIEL BROOKS, ON WINNING THE 2003 CLASS AAA GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR HARD WORK, COMPETITIVE SPIRIT, AND DEDICATION THROUGHOUT THEIR SEASON.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team affords young people the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork while developing great athletic talents; and

Whereas, track and field competitions individualize each team member’s skills, but to become a championship team, all competitors must have outstanding physical abilities; and

Whereas, with the great leadership of Head Coach Daniel Brooks and his gifted assistants Bennie Isaac, Maurice Campbell, Patrick Kelly, Judy Ray, Maurice Walker, Yasha Jones, Nikki Wilson, William Bacon, and Kelly Williams, the girls’ track and field team of Dreher High School of Columbia was able to become State Champions; and

Whereas, on May, 10, 2003, the Dreher High School Girls’ Track and Field Team competed in their most important meet of the season and defeated teams from across the State; and

Whereas, the “Devils” scored a total of 99 points, with their closest competitor, J. L. Mann High School, scoring 90 points, and the team captured the 2003 Class AAA Girls’ Track and Field State Championship Title, taking this title for the second time in three years; and

Whereas, the members of the Dreher team were strong competitors in every event at the State Championship Meet, gaining points in pole vaulting, hurdles, long jump, shot put, and most of the other competitions of the day; and

Whereas, the members of this exceptional team are Kathryn Baysinger, Lauren Benjamin, Nakia Billie, Sarah Binkley, Lucia Derks, Vanessa Green, Keturah Jackson, Brittney James, Courtney Lemon, Kim McIntee, DeQuena Niles, Amy Pate, Whitney Sparks, Liza Todd, Tolly Todd, Lakesha Tolliver, Katherine Warden, and Ferial Williams; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly wish these young champions much success in their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend their congratulations to the Dreher High School “Devils” of Columbia and their coach, Daniel Brooks, on winning the 2003 Class AAA Girls’ Track and Field State Championship Title and commend them for their hard work, competitive spirit, and dedication throughout their season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the members of the Dreher High School Girls’ Track and Field Team and Coach Daniel Brooks of Columbia.
