Mrs. Cancino’s Fifth Grade Band Newsletter

January 19, 2018

Dear Band Parents:

This week, students at Barnhart gave their concert. Great job, students! Our next concert isn’t until April (dates are on my website).

Thanks to snow, delays, dismissals, and concerts, all of my 8 classes are in totally different places. For the month of January, your child should be working on pages 15 and 16 in the book, concentrating on lines 58, 61 (test), 62 (new note), 63 (probably Spring Concert tune), 66 (test), and 67 (Band Ninja test). Barring any additional snow a playing test on line #61 as well as Band Ninja tests will happen before February. Fingers crossed!

Monday/Tuesday, as long as Printshop delivers my order, your children will be taking their quarter 2 written exam. They shouldn’t panic. It’s nothing they haven’t learned, so if they’ve been practicing and learning along with us all year, they’ll be fine. Review should include pages 6-16.

We have been working hard to take apart the All-County Band audition piece, looking at each measure, analyzing it, and putting it back together. They also have their All-County Band playing test coming up the week of February 19th. All of the children will take a test on this. Think of it like a mid-term performed exam. It’s just about in the middle of our book, and the students should be able (with practice!) to play it at this point in the year. **Don’t forget, there is a recording of their solo online as well as printable copies of the solo, just in case theirs has gone missing. Check my website on the “Homework” tab.

If your child missed the winter concert, they should have received an alternate written assignment. Just as the math teacher cannot just “give” your child and A for a missed test, I cannot “give” an A if your child did not play at the concert. All make-up concert work will be due on January 23rd. In addition, anything that reads NHI in the gradebook (for the second quarter only) should be submitted for credit by January 23rd. Playing tests we’ll make up in class, but written work should be completed. Anything not made up will remain a zero.

Lackey High School will be hosting The Commodores on February 6th at 7:00 p.m. for a FREE concert. Go hear some amazing music, write a short paragraph describing what you heard using musical vocabulary, and earn 10 bonus points for the third quarter.

Have a great weekend!
