INFORMATION ON A COMMON CONDITION IN OUR SCHOOL

ASTHMA

Asthma is a physical condition, not an emotional illness. It affects at least one in every ten children. A sudden narrowing of the air passages making it difficult to breathe causes an attack. Asthma can be controlled by, firstly, avoiding known irritants, and secondly, by the inhaling specific drugs. DRUGS CAN BE SELF ADMINISTERED BY THE CHILD CONCERNED.

Known Irritants

v  House dust mites

v  Grass pollen

v  Furry or feathery animals

v  Certain foods

v  Exposure to high winds

v  Certain fumes

Drugs

There are two main groups of drugs – one to prevent attacks and the other to relieve attacks once suffered. Preventors include Intal, Becotide or Pulmicourt and relievers include Ventolin or Atrovent.

SCHOOL POLICY ON THE MANAGEMENT OF ASTHMA

v  We welcome all pupils with asthma.

v  Encourage and help pupils with asthma to participate fully in all aspects of school life.

v  Recognise that asthma is a condition affecting many of our children.

v  Recognise that immediate access to inhalers is vital and therefore they should be kept in the classroom and the teacher to manage access.

v  Do all we can to make sure that the school environment is favourable to children with asthma so that they can support their friends; and so that pupils with asthma can avoid stigma sometimes attached to a condition.

v  Follow school procedure (ask first aider) in the event of a child having an asthma attack.

v  Work in partnership with parents to ensure pupils are not absent from school because they ‘suffer from asthma’.

v  Reassure parents of pupils who suffer from asthma that is a manageable condition which the school can support and therefore pupils are expected to attend school each day unless supported by a doctor’s letter.
