Job Description: Associate Teacher

Reports to: Director, STEM Curriculum Coordinator, and Lead Teacher

An integral part of the operations at the Children’s Center is that everyone works together as a team, contributing to the development of the children and the Center. The Lead Teacher has ultimate responsibility in each group.

Requirements

  • Minimum 24 units in ECE including 3 units in Administration
  • Hold or be eligible for a Child Development Permit “Teacher” classification
  • One year of experience working with young children
  • Good interpersonal skills; the ability to interact and work effectively with children, parents, and co-workers.

Responsibilities

The Associate Teacher assists the Lead Teacher in the following:

  • Assumes Lead Teacher’s duties, as needed
  • May have responsibility for the administration of medication, in the absence of the Lead Teacher
  • Completes incident forms or supervises their completion
  • Communicates with parents in lieu of Lead Teacher, and generally facilitates open communication with parents
  • Participates in training, direction, and coordination of substitute teachers and new staff, and may also supervise student teachers
  • Supervises and meets the emotional and physical needs of a group of children
  • Communicates appropriately with parents
  • Observes and makes brief notations on children regarding growth in areas of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development
  • Is familiar with acts in accordance with Center philosophy and policies
  • Assists in supervision of children to ensure their safety and well-being, moving with the children as they change location
  • Maintains a clean, safe working environment
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates curriculum activities
  • Assists in the arrival and departure of children
  • Notifies the lead teacher of needed supplies
  • Assists children with toileting or diapering
  • Participates in team meetings
  • Sets regular, job related goals to further professional growth
  • Is responsive to lead teacher, taking and following through on requests and directions in a cooperative manner
  • Is flexible to meet Center needs, including assisting teachers and children in other groups, as needed
  • Follows through on assigned and self-initiated tasks
  • Is able to respond quickly when a situation warrants immediate action
  • Is familiar with routine paperwork (i.e. sign-in, incident, meds.)
  • Provides supportive assistance to new substitutes and volunteers, as well as new staff
  • Maintains a physically healthy condition so as to have the ability to pick up children weighing up to 45 pounds and to play actively with children
