SYNERGISTICS:
Whitley's professional work has been synergistic first in developing and promoting rock art research in the discipline (e.g., illustrated by his authorship of the text Introduction to Rock Art Research and his edited volume Handbook of Rock Art Research, as well as his organization and leadership of the SAA Rock Art Interest Group). Second, he has also played a key role in incorporating rock art in cultural resource management (for which he was received the Thomas King Award from the SCA). Third, he has worked to integrate and reconcile Native American and archaeological concerns through rock art studies (receiving awards from various tribal groups for these efforts). Fourth, he has worked towards public education concerning rock art by publishing four site guides. Finally, he has played a very active role in the international rock art research and historic preservation communities, representing the US to ICOMOS, UNESCO and the French Ministry of Culture.
