OFFICE HOURS:

PURPOSE: The earth science lab is designed to supply the student with a hands on learning environment where observations and experimentation allow for a more complete understanding of various concepts developed in class and foster critical thinking skills.

CO-REQUISITE: ESC 1000, Earth Science

REQUIRED LAB MANUAL: Earth Science Lab Manual , M. Werhner

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions and theory for each lab exercise should be read BEFORE the regular lab period. At the beginning of each lab period the instructor will explain the theory, procedures, and equipment for the lab to be performed. Students will work in groups assigned by the instructor. Students should work together within a group but not between groups. Data collection between team members should agree; however, each student is free to form his/her own conclusions and answers to questions. Each student should be sure that he/she is participating and contributing to the lab. Students who do not contribute but merely copy other peoples work will be penalized on their lab grades. Save each copy of the labs for review for the exams.

LAB REPORTS: Completed worksheets for each exercise must be submitted in accordance with the procedures set forth by the lab instructor. Labs must be turned in by the end of the lab period in which they are performed in order to get credit (unless otherwise specified by the instructor). Each report will be graded for accuracy, completeness, and neatness, and must be done in pencil. BRING A PENCIL TO LAB. Labs written in pen will be penalized 10 %.

GRADING: All lab reports will be graded. Labs will be graded and returned to the students. Your average on the TMYN quizzes will count as a lab grade. At the end of the term your lab grades will be averaged and will count as 60 % of your final grade. Your final exam will count as 40 % of your grade. I will add these two numbers together to determine your final grade (see the example below). See the college catalog for I and W grades.

Grading Scale: 90 – 100AExample:

80 – 89B91 (labs average) x 0.60 (60%) = 54.6

70 – 79C82 (grade on lab final) x 0.40 (40%) = 32.8

60 – 69DTotal (final average) = 87.4

below 60FFinal grade = B

The schedule of lab experiments is on the following page. To be prepared for the lab and to complete the lab during the lab period you are expected to read the lab before coming to class. All labs are to be completed and turned in BEFORE leaving class unless other instructions are given.

Students who withdraw from lab will be withdrawn from lecture also.

Cheating: Cheating of any nature will not be tolerated and will receive a grade of zero.

Visitors in class: In accordance with school regulations, only those persons registered for the class may be in the classroom during the class period. Friends, relatives, and children of students are not permitted in class.

Food and drinks of any kind are not allowed in the laboratory.

Cell Phones and Pagers: Please turn off all cell phones before entering the classroom. Students are not permitted to use your cell phone during class. If you complete and turn in your lab before the end of the period do not use your cell phone until you exit the classroom.

Classroom Behavior: I understand that sometimes students may be late for class. However this can be disruptive for both instructor and students. Students who are more than 15 minutes late for lab will miss critical instructions and will have points deducted from the lab accordingly. For the protection of all students and maintenance of laboratory equipment careful and responsible behavior in the lab is required at all times.

Student Assistance: The instructor is most willing to render outside assistance if needed. Regular office hours will be announced and posted by my office, and I will be available at other times by appointment.

Any student whose disability falls within the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and requires accommodations should contact the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. The office is located in the Student Service Building Room 204. You may also reach the office by phone at 259-6035.
