Background Information: Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X are arguably two of the most known Civil Right
leaders during the American Civil Rights movement. Many would say that it is hard to see which one out of the two had agreater long term and short term impact. By thoroughly examining the two approaches its easy to tell which one of them
had a Greater short and long term impact on civil rights in America.
Controversial Question: Who had a greater long term and short term impact on American civil rights: Martin Luther King, Jr.
or Malcolm X?Thesis Statement:
In my opinion, I believe that Martin Luther King, Jr. had a greater long and short term impact on American civil rights.Sub-Topics:
1)Martin Luther King had a non-violent way of protest made his tactics work (better than the “by all means necessary” approach Malcolm X had2)Martin Luther King is more known than Malcolm X which means he had made a greater impact in the long term
3)Martin Luther King took more action than Malcolm X (speeches, marches, boycotts)

Evidence: While he attended college Martin Luther King learned of Gandhi’s non-violent ways of protest in which he used
in order set things straight politically in India. Martin Luther King learned from this and began using non-violent ways of protest such as boycotts, speeches and marches to get his point across. This led to him
winning the Nobel peace prize.
Concluding Sentence:If you thoroughly look at the facts you can easily see that Martin Luther King’s non-violent approach
worked better than Malcolm X’s “by all means necessary approach”, which mostly had to do with violence.Paragraph 3 (Sub-Topic 2)

Evidence:Martin Luther King is more remembered than Malcolm X. Martin Luther King has more things to be
Remembered for than Malcolm X does. The Nobel peace prize, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the“I have a Dream” speech; these are just a few of the things that many people remember Martin Luther
King for. By going over all the facts, there are less things that Malcolm X is known for.
Concluding Sentence:By thoroughly looking at the facts I found out that Martin Luther King indeed is more well-known than
Malcolm X which also means Martin Luther King took more action into his work.Paragraph 4 (Sub-Topic 3)

Evidence: Martin Luther King took more action into his work and made a very impact on nearly everything he did. He
Lead marches, called boycotts and made many inspirational speeches to help fight for the rights of hisfellow African-Americans. Malcolm X did a lot for African-Americans, but it seems as if Martin Luther
King had done for his people and achieved success every time he did it.
Concluding Sentence: By thoroughly looking at the facts, I found out that Martin Luther King had taken more action than
Malcolm X when it came to the Civil Right movement.Paragraph 5 (Conclusion)
Summary of Sub-Topics: All in all, the fact that Martin Luther King used a non-violent method of protest, is more remembered
than Malcolm X and took more action during the civil rights movement shows that he made a greater long term and shortterm impact.
