Description

This Activity Plan is designed as one among many through which studentswillrotate insmallgroups. Theactivity involves repairing damage to thetread part ofthe tire.Damage is usuallyincurredvia nail,screw, tackpuncture,etc.It is important to note thattheonly acceptablemethodof repairing atire is via thepatch method, nottheplug method. The plugmethod isdangerous, out ofdate and not acceptableintoday’s modern automotive world.

LessonOutcomes

The studentwillbe abletoproperlyrepair a puncture wound in thetread areaof atire.

Assumptions

Beforetryingthemselves,students will havebeen givensometheoryandthe instructor willhavedemonstratedthe proper procedure for repairing a tire.Inaddition,this activity should beintroducedafter thetirechange activity.

Terminology

Drillbit:acuttingtool usedinconjunction witha drillto createacylindrical hole.

Hand drill: atool usedinconjunctionwith adrillbittocreatea hole.

Plug/patch material:usually apatchthat alsoincorporates asmallpluginthemiddle of thepatch.

Puncturewound: apiercingof thetiretreadusually causedbyaforeignbody (e.g.,screw, nailor small pieceofmetal).

Sidecutting pliers: astyleof pliers that is usefulfor removingaforeignbody from thetreadofthetire.

Tireawl: an awlusedto slightly enlarge thepuncturein order to properly installthe tire patch.

Tirebuffer:acoursecircular wheel designedtoprepare theinner surfaceof the tire.

Tirecement:theglueused toadherethepatch totheinsidesurfaceofthe tire.

Tirechalk: aspecialtypeof chalk usedto mark the tire.

Tirestitcher:a deviceusedto ensure thatthetirepatch sticks onto the tire properly.

HowtoRepairaCarorLightTruck Tire

Activity

1.Removethe tire from the rim(orsimply work with aloose tire).

2.Intentionally pierce the tiretread using pliers and atypicalforeign object(screw,nail,etc.).

3.Mark theforeign object location withtire chalk on theinside of the tire.

4.Removetheforeign object withpliers.

5.Drilla3/16"holethroughboththeinsideandoutsideofthetirewhereitwaspunctured.

6.Bufftheinsideofthetirearoundthepuncturewoundusing a buffing wheelanddrill.Thebuffedareashould beslightlylarger than thetire patch.

7.Applycontact cement tothebuffedarea.

8.Apply contact cementtothe insidearea of the puncture wound. This canbe donebyapplyingcementtothe tireawl andthen insertingthe awl into thepuncture wound.

9.Let the areadry3–5 minutes.

10.Removetheprotectivefilm from thepatch/plugrepaircomponentand insert theplug fromtheinsideof the tire.

11.From outsideofthe tire,pullthe patch/plug repair componentthroughasfar as you can.

12.Frominsidethetire,usethetirestitchingtoolto firmly stitchthetirepatch/plugtotheinsideof the tirebyrollingitover the patchfor1–2 minutesinmultiple directions.

13.Removetheprotectiveplasticfilm from thetirepatch/plug.

14.Remountthetireandinflateittotheproperspecification.

15.Cuttheprotrudingplugfromtheoutsideofthetiretoapproximately1/8"abovethetiresurface.

16.Reassemble the tireand wheel. Checkto makesure thetire patch/plugisnot leaking.
