A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Mary Opal Sams Mitchell.

WHEREAS, Mary Opal Sams Mitchell was born April 17, 1918, the cherished daughter of the late Etna and Arzilla Dugger Sams; and

WHEREAS, a resident of Corbin, Kentucky, Mary Opal Sams Mitchell was a faithful member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, a skilled entrepreneur, and the manager of several small businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores, and specialty shops; and

WHEREAS, Mary Opal Sams Mitchell was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and her devotion to her family was without measure; and

WHEREAS, Mary Opal Sams Mitchell departed this earthly life on February 19, 2014, leaving her family, friends, and an entire community in solemn mourning; and

WHEREAS, Mary Opal Sams Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Murrell Mitchell; daughter, Nancy Jackson Smith and her infant child, Stephanie Jackson; and siblings, Joe Sams, Dorlyn Sams, Johnny Sams, Piney Sams Rader, Grace Mitchell, and Artha Sams Jones. She is survived by her sons, Ray Mitchell (Linda), Bob Mitchell (Nancy), Willard Mitchell (Judy), Pat Mitchell, Carson Mitchell (Linda), Nile Mitchell (Kyle), and Mike Mitchell (Elisha); 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Elsie Sams Whitehead, Louise Wilhoit (Ted), and Dell Sams (Donna); and a host of other family members who will dearly miss her;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The members of the Senate, both individually and collectively, hereby express their most profound and sincere condolences upon the passing of Mary Opal Sams Mitchell, and extend their heartfelt sympathy to her family in this time of loss.

âSection 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory, honor, and appreciation of the life and legacy of Mary Opal Sams Mitchell.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Robert Stivers II for delivery.
