Definition/Classification Essay Assignment
Paper Assignment:
At some point in your future career, either as a student or working professional, you will be asked to tell someone what some term means to you.
With this assignment, you are going to write an extended definition. This means that your thesis statement should give a broad definition, and your body paragraphs should develop this definition into a complete showing of what a term or idea means to you. I have given some suggested topics below. If you wish to use one not on the list, please consult me, first.
Please remember: your paper will be shared with your classmates. If you choose to write about a negative experience, keep in mind that sensitive topics may not be appropriate. If you would like to write about such an experience, please see me before the workshop date to discuss your ideas.
A successful paper will:
· Have a clear statement about the meaning of a term or idea
· Effectively use supporting paragraphs and details to support your thesis.
· Use solid evidence and logic to support your definition
· Consider your audience – this is a personal essay. Your audience is your classmates and myself.
· Show a procession of thoughtful revision through the drafts.
· Focus on a single idea and develop it fully with a purpose in mind.
The final paper should be 1,000-1500 words long, and conform to MLA formatting standards.
Due Dates:
Tuesday, April 26: First draft/workshop draft due. Bring 2 copies
Tuesday, May 10: Revision draft due with revision memo.
