What is Cite them right

Cite them right is a resource to guide you through referencing in the Harvard style. It tells you all you need to know about the Harvard referencing style, plagiarism and collusion. Cite them right is now the standard Harvard referencing style guide at UEL, forall Schools apart from the School of Psychology, which uses the APA system.

There are many other referencing styles but it is important that you use the Harvard referencing style as outlined in Pears, R. and Shields, G. (2013). Cite them right: the essential referencing guide.9th edn.Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan (Palgrave Study Skills).

How to access Cite them right online

On-Campus

  • Log on to the network in the normal way, then click on the Mozilla Firefox icon from the desktop, or from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen
  • Open the Library and Learning Services website at
  • Select Databases & E-Journals
  • Select C and then Cite them right from the Database A-Z list
  • Select On-Campus

Off-Campus

(You will need to have an ATHENS account to access this resource off-campus).

  • Complete the above steps except select Off-Campus
  • Enter your UEL Athens account information into the fields that appear in the next screen
  • In the next cite them right online page that appears click Log in
  • In the next cite them right online page that appears click Institutional Log in
  • You will then be redirected to Cite them right online
  • ‘Access is brought to you by University of East London’ should appear in the top left hand corner

How to use Cite them right online

Search: Enter the resource type you are interested in into one of the search fields on the home page.

Browse: Select one of the categories from the menu bar at the top of the home page. Each category expands to show you the different types of sources you can reference.

What Cite them right online can help you with

  • For each kind of source, such as printed books, journal articles etc. Cite them right online explains:

  • Cite them right online also gives examples for a variety of cases. For example within the printed books section, examples are given for both books with single authors and for books with multiple authors.

Using Cite them right online to construct your own references

The You Try tool enables you to easily construct your own references. You can either copy and paste your reference into your assignment or email it to yourself for later.On the page for each resource type you will see a You Try icon and a text box. You can replace the example text with information relevant to your information source.

Navigating using the site map

On the navigation menu at the very bottom of the home page, you will also see a

site map link, which will display a complete list of all of the content available on Cite them right online.
