WELDING ONE THREE CREDITS

GREAT BASINCOLLEGE

INSTRUCTOR: John Amestoy

PHONE: 753-2297

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the principles of Shielded Metal Arc Welding and Oxy-Fuel cutting operations. Also covered in this course will be Safety in Welding and Cutting, SMAW equipment, Electrode identification and selection.

COURSE GOALS:

CLASSROOM:

  1. Distinguish between direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC).
  2. Interpret American Welding Society (AWS) abbreviations regarding welding current polarity.
  3. Identify the equipment and accessories used in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).
  4. Identify factors to consider when selecting an arc welding machine.
  5. Demonstrate the assembly of a welding machine, leads, and electrode holder.
  6. List the steps in connecting the electrode holder to the lead.
  7. Describe the procedure for inspecting a shielded metal arc welding outfit.
  8. Set the proper amperage and polarity on a welding machine.
  9. Identify carbon and low alloy SMAW electrodes.
  10. Identify six purposes of an electrode covering.
  11. Interpret the AWS electrode identification system.
  12. Demonstrate the trial amperage of a welding machine using the rule of thumb method.
  13. Select an electrode to meet the requirement of a weld.
  14. Identify proper methods of storing electrodes.
  15. Identify the safety rules required for arc welding.
  16. Demonstrate how an arc is started.
  17. Identify and demonstrate five essentials for a quality weld.
  18. Identify the parts of an oxyfuel cutting outfit.
  19. Describe the function of each of the parts.
  20. List the steps required to assemble an oxyfuel outfit.
  21. List the steps required to shutdown an oxyfuel station.
  22. Identify the safety features of an oxyfuel cutting outfit.
  23. Descried the procedure used to check for leaks in an oxyfuel outfit.
  24. Demonstrate steps to light and adjust the flame on an oxyfuel torch.
  25. Identify three types and the parts of each.
  26. List fuel gases used for oxyfuel cutting.
  27. Identify the protective clothing used in welding and cutting operations.
  28. List safety precautions that must be taken when performing oxyfuel and SMAW operations.

LAB ASSIGNMENTS:

The student will perform welding exercises in the following areas:

  1. Flat position pads using E6013, E6011, and E7018 electrodes.
  2. Flat position corner joints using E6010 and E7018 electrodes.
  3. Flat position groove joints with backing using E7018 electrodes.
  4. Setup and shutdown of Oxy-Fuel cutting equipment.
  5. Make straight, bevel and circle cuts using Oxy-Fuel equipment.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

The student must pass the safety test with 100% before the student is allowed to work in the shop. The student will pass each assigned weld (to the instructor’s satisfaction) before moving on to the next weld. The student will pass each cutting assignment (to the instructor’s satisfaction) before moving on to the next assignment. The student will follow safety rules at all times. The student will be observed (by the instructor) following safety rules and graded according to the following of these rules.

TOTAL 100%

NOTE: All classroom assignments are due on the date assigned. If you are absent it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the next assignment. The assignment(s) are due at the beginning of class on the day of your return. You will loose one letter grade for every day (not class period) after that.

ATTENDANCE:

After being tardy three times (for more than 5min.), this will count as one unexcused absence. If you are tardy more than 30 minutes this will count as a half a day unexcused, and if one and a half hours late or more this counts as an unexcused absence. Days missed with a doctors excuse will be excused as well as other absences with approval by the instructor (instructor will decide the legitimacy of the situation whether it will be excused or not) arranged prior to the absence. AFTER HAVING THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

I encourage any student needing to request accommodations for a specific disability to please meet with me at your earliest convenience to ensure timely and appropriate accommodations.
