This Job Hazard Analysis will serve as a reminder that at no time in the performance of your duties are you to put yourself at risk. There should be no hesitation when a choice is presented that could lead to your being in danger, you should always take the safe way. If you feel that a confrontation could lead to a dangerous situation, then get away from the situation. If you have a strange intuition that danger could be imminent, then trust your instinct and avoid that situation or location.

Below are job hazards that you may encounter during your time on duty. If you injure yourself while on duty please note the time, place, and cause of injury and notify your supervisor so that an incident report may be completed. An accident report must be filed as soon as possible after the injury is reported.

Vehicles shall be operated in accordance with applicable Federal, state and local laws.

Activity / Hazard / Control
Walking / Ankle Injuries
Slips / Trips / Falls / Wear boots or shoes with ankle
height of at least 4 inches.
Be aware of rough surfaces and uneven terrain when walking.
Over Exertion / Prolonged Standing / Walking / Be in good physical condition.
Take breaks as required.
Snakes / Snake Bites / Do not harass or kill snakes.
Do not attempt to move snakes.
Contact ranger staff for assistance if needed.
Exposure / Exposure from the elements / Wear proper clothing.
Be aware of exposure duration and
limit duration if necessary. Be
knowledgeable of the symptoms of
heat/cold exposure related illnesses.
Lifting / Back Strain / Get assistance when necessary. When
lifting, keep the load close to the
body and lift with the legs.
Walking through vegetation / Getting poked by sticks
Poison oak
Ticks / Do not follow too closely behind if you are walking through overhanging vegetation.
Wear eye protection such as sunglasses
For poison oak, avoid brushing up against sticks or leaves of poison oak.
If you do contact poison oak, wash with cold water and a cleaning agent such as Technu
Ticks hang on vegetation and crawl on to you when you walk past. Avoid brushing up against vegetation if possible.
Tuck your pants into your boots and tuck your shirt in.
Wear light colored clothing.
Do a tick check upon leaving the field and take a shower and change clothes when you get home.
