2011 - 2012 Safety Patrol Post Guidelines

General Patrol Instructions

-  A.M. post begins promptly at 8:35, while P.M. post begins at 3:35.

-  Patrols should wear their belts both at their posts and throughout the entirety of the school day. While engaging in strenuous activity such as PE or recess - or any time the belt becomes uncomfortable or distracting - patrols may remove their belts and temporarily keep them in a safe place. Belts should be put on again immediately following the aforementioned activity. If a patrol fails to bring their belt to school, he or she should alert Mr. Haws or Mr. Humphreys immediately, and should NOT report to their designated post that day.

-  Patrols are expected to be both vigilant and helpful while manning a post. The purpose of a patrol is to promote both the physical and emotional safety of all students at Patrick Henry Elementary. This is accomplished by both aiding students in need of assistance and redirecting inappropriate student behavior.

-  Patrols should not engage in play or behavior of any kind that disallows from monitoring their area and performing their duties.

-  Patrols should not directly confront parents or other adults at the school regarding actions, behaviors or possible safety violations. If a patrol believes that some form of action is necessary they should seek a nearby teacher or Mr. Haws or Mr. Humphreys.

-  Any time a patrol has to engage a student while at a post, Mr. Haws or Mr. Humphreys should be notified about the incident directly following the conclusion of the post.

- A.M. patrols that have morning news should first check-in in the gym before heading to

the library.

- Patrols DO NOT hand out “strikes,” “warnings” or any other type of verbal punishment. Please see Mr. Haws or Mr. Humphreys if you feel that a student is being particularly difficult.

Specific Post Instructions

-  While posted at either of the two Kiss & Learns, patrols should wait until the vehicle approaching has stopped before assisting with those passengers exiting. In an effort to be courteous, they should try and make eye contact with the driver and give them some form of small greeting (e.g. “good morning”).

-  While working the flag post, the American flag should be the first one put up and the last one taken down. In the afternoon when the flags are taken down, the American flag should be folded by at least two people into a neat triangle shape, with the stars on the outside. When you have finished with your flag duties, please help out Cones or Kiss & Learn until post end.

-  On cone duty students should be watchful for the oncoming buses. Cones should be moved prior to a bus’s arrival in order to allow them into the drop-off/pick-up area. Cones should be put out in the afternoon one at a time beginning with the area closest to school and ending with the single cone nearest the gym door. When picking the cones up, they should be removed in the reverse order and placed inside the main entry doors for the night.

- If you have the post of holding a bus sign (P.M. only), you should hold your sign so it is

visible to all students until everyone has safely boarded the bus and found a seat. At

that time you should return your sign to the gym.

-  Both K-1 and 2-5 blacktop duty has patrols watching for any rough horse-play, teasing or bullying, or any other type of dangerous activity. If they spot such behavior patrols should nicely ask the student(s) to discontinue the activity, or, if the offense appears to be more serious, contact a nearby teacher immediately. On rainy days, blacktop posts are to report into the gymnasium to assist with the morning line-up.

-  While working the pond post, patrols should attempt to ensure that no horse-play occurs. This might include throwing rocks, sticks or other items into the pond, or wrestling, horse-playing or even playing catch too close to the pond. If this behavior occurs, patrols should ask the student(s) to discontinue the action immediately. If these verbal instructions are not successful, patrols should contact a nearby teacher or notify Mr. Haws or Mr. Humphreys.

-  While working a hallway post, students should curb inappropriate student behavior in the hallways and look to aid students in need of assistance. At no time should a hallway patrol run or yell in the hallway, even if it is to address a perceived violation.

Specific Bus Patrol Instructions

-  The mission of the bus patrol is to ensure that all students on the bus experience safe passage to and from school. They are to assist the driver in this goal as the driver is ultimately in charge of all activity on the bus. Bus patrols should introduce themselves to both their “regularly scheduled” driver and any substitute driver that may fill in, and let the driver know of their patrol status. They are to obey all bus rules while serving in the patrol position, which includes no standing while the bus is moving, no throwing objects of any kind on the bus, and always listening to the driver.
