Students identify and justify the choice of priority issues and examine the roles that the health system and health promotion play in achieving better health for all Australians.
Task Description:
Part A: You are the health minister for the Federal Government of Australia and you are to write a one page report and deliver a presentation to your fellow cabinet ministers that justifies the selection of a national health priority area for preventable chronic diseases and illnesses.
You can choose for the illnesses and diseases:
· Cardiovascular Disease
· Injury
· Respiratory Disease
· Diabetes
· Cancer – Skin, Breast, Lung, Bowel
· Mental Health Problems and Illnesses
Your presentation is to be 5-10 minutes and needs to explore the priority health area by covering the following areas:
- the nature of the problem
- extent of the problem (trends)
- risk factors and protective factors
- the sociocultural, socioeconomic and environmental determinants
- groups at risk
In addition, you will need to highlight a non-government organisation targeted at your chosen priority area that deserves your commendation as the health minister. This non-government organisation needs to be contacted and visited by yourself with proof of your visit to be submitted in the assessment presentation. In researching the organisation you must explore:
- Their role and responsibilities
- Their action plan to improve health
- Critically analyse their current strategies and suggest improvements to their service
Part B:
You are to design an information handout and/or package to be handed to your fellow cabinet ministers (the class) and the Prime Minister (teacher). The handout/package needs to include:
-Information about your priority health area
-Information on your non-government organisation
- Peer involvement activity
Your presentation and handout will be marked on creativity, peer involvement and quality of information. The presentation itself can be done in any format – PowerPoint, Prezi or video.
