I. Review and Approve Minutes
· Minutes approved
II. Paula Report
· We have never fully assessed the general education program
· IL rubric pilot assessment completed and reported on
o Convenience (small) sample, since the rubric was not originally created for general education
o IL vs IT – IL was originally IT
· Pilot assessment of writing rubric was tested – no final results or data submitted due to faculty
· John Stevenson, 2008, first attempt at assessment of general education
o Developed 5 student learning outcomes (same as the ones that are on the Knowledge Rubric)
o Collected samples from student work, normed a rubric, assessed student work for those outcomes
· Grand Challenge – 2011(?) pilot assessment
· GEIST Update
o GEIST wants to meet with SAGE at some point
o Would also like someone more involved with assessment on General Education Committee (Jim will be recruiting)
o Discussion about software – looking for the Goldilocks piece
· concerned about burden on faculty – or third party?
· ATL Listening Forums – to discuss options of how often, how many outcomes
o Get faculty feedback on the various ideas for the general education assessment process
o Gathering data on faculty opinion
o Needs to be faculty driven
o Timeline: next fall to begin pilot assessment
o Since General Education is a program, we are required to assess in the same way as the programs
· GEIST is dissolving December 31, 2015; new director of General Education
o It will be up to SAGE to make a plan, but we need an office to own the technology, process, etc.
III. New Business
· Need to outline a new plan:
o Design a plan to select a random sample of students – how many students? Random sample or representative?
o Follow the ways we are currently performing program assessment
§ Gather information about how programs are collecting data
o SAGE PLAN:
§ We need a General Education Director.
§ If you’re selected for a certain outcome: Required to assess the competency of a third of your class, with a minimum of 20 students.
