Purpose
This national certificate is designed for trainees who are either entering, or are employed in the binding and finishing sector of the printing industry.
Holders of this certificate have demonstrated competence in the knowledge and skills required by industry. The qualification comprises two parts, the first being a compulsory section that covers the areas of trade knowledge, substrates, safety and trade calculations. The second section is an elective, where candidates can choose at least 5credits at level 2 or above from anywhere on the National Qualifications Framework.
This qualification has been designed to be undertaken by trainees on-job, supported by distance education studies.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
This qualification will be awarded to people who have gained credit for all of the compulsory unit standards and who have met the requirements of the elective section.
Award of NZQF National QualificationsCredit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Version 6 was republished in April 2013 to indicate that this qualification has been reviewed and a decision made to expire it without replacement.
Version 6 of this qualification was issued following review of Binding and Finishing unit standards.
Changes to structure and content

This qualification contains a standard that replaced earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standard.

All trainees enrolled in programmes leading to this National qualification will be supported to complete it. Competenz will advise all employers currently involved in training programmes of the changes.
Previous versions of the qualification
Version 5 was revised and issued in January 2004 to take account of changes resulting from the review of the core Printing Production unit standards. Unit standard 20058 was added to the compulsory section and credit total increased from 48 to 53.
Version 4 was issued in September 2001 in order to update contact details.
Version 3 was issued in February 2001 to take account of the review of the Binding and Finishing and Printing Production unit standards. Unit standard 17929 was replaced by unit standard 3641 and the domain for unit standard 340 was changed from Printing – Graphic Pre-press to Printing Production.
Version 2 was issued in October 1998 in order to extend the period of registration.
Version 1 was issued to replace the apprenticeship in Print Finishing/Machine Bookbinding and the transition arrangements have expired. Any person requiring further information about transition from the Trade Certificates in Printing is advised to contact the standard setting body at the address below.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess by a recognised Quality Assurance Body before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Organisation with consent to assess and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
