Chapter 3

1.  What was the first harvest like after the rebellion? Who didn’t do any of the hard work and why?

Answers: The first harvest was very successful. The animals collected the biggest harvest ever. The pigs didn’t do any of the hard work because they were the supervisors.

2.  Which animal was doing an enormous amount of work? What did the other animals think of him?

Answers: Boxer did a tremendous amount of work, so the other animals respected him greatly.

3.  Describe how the animals felt after the first harvest. Had the work habits or behavior of all the animals changed after the rebellion?

Answers: The animals were very happy and proud of their accomplishment. However, not all the animals had changed. For instance, Benjamin hadn’t changed his work habits. Also, the cat and Mollie seemed not to be interested in working hard.

4.  What was Snowball’s and Napoleon’s relationship like?

Answer: They were becoming rivals or enemies. They disagreed on everything.

5.  What did Napoleon do with the nine puppies? Why do you think he did this?

Answers: He took them away from their parents and kept them separated from the other animals so that he could education them. He may have done this so that he could raise the dogs himself to become his supporters.

6.  Who was drinking the milk? Who were the windfall apples for? How did the others feel about this? What did Squealer say that made the animals who didn’t get to eat the windfall apples satisfied?

Answers: The pigs drank the milk and ate the windfall apples. The other animals were unhappy about this at first. They thought that it was unfair, yet Squealer was able to convince them that is was necessary. He said they really didn’t want to eat the food but needed it to keep healthy, and the pigs had to stay healthy in order to keep the farm safe from Mr. Jones. Therefore, the pigs needed to be treated differently so that they could protect the animals from their enemy.
