Student Athletic Trainer Handbook
Mission Statement
The rebel athletic training staff working with team physicians with goal to provide quality medical care of the student athletes. Each member of the sport medicine staff will work to provide leadership, advice and service necessary to prevent injury, care for the injured and sick, and rehabilitation and recondition the injured athletes.
I. Duties for Student Athletic Trainers
A. Responsible for maintaining academic work and good work attendance.
B. Responsible for following all school rules at all times.
C. Responsible for working events assigned by Co-Head Athletic Trainers.
D. Upperclassmen responsible for helping and mentoring of underclassmen
E. Responsible to be on-call for additional duties.
F. Responsible for field setup and clean up
G. Responsible for reporting suspected injuries to Co-Head Athletic Trainers at all times.
H. Responsible for the everyday cleanliness and care for both athletic training rooms.
I. Assisting ATs in packing athletic training room equipment and supplies for all games (both home and away).
The most important quality from the student athletic trainers are that they are loyal and dependable. We will not tolerate anyone who misses practice or game assignments without acceptable excuse. The Co-Head Athletic Trainers reserve the right to send a student athletic trainer home or refer student trainers to their respective Vice-Principals if excessive and blatant violations of these or any other rules occur.
J. The athletic training room will be kept clinically clean at all times.
K. All therapeutic equipment and modalities must be handled with care.
II. All therapeutic rehabilitation will be administered according to Athletic Training Room Procedures
A. prescription.
B. Student athletic trainers shall administer no changes in therapeutic treatments without permission from the Co-Head Athletic Trainers.
C. While in the athletic training room, all student trainers are responsible for taking care of all athletes (taping, treatments, etc.) no matter what sport they are participating in.
D. All equipment checked out will recorded on a check out sheet
E. All athletes will be asked to sign in on the rank one.
F. All treatments and rehabs are to be recorded in the daily treatment log via Rank One.
G. There is to be no food, drink, shoes, or cell phones in the athletic Training Room.
H. Student trainers will sit at the front of the bus for ALL bus travel
I. Any grievances should be directed to a Co-Head Athletic Trainer in a private manner.
III. Dress Code
A. All school dress codes apply while working in the athletic training room, practices, games, or during any other athletic event.
B. Students are expected to wear the appropriate T-shirt (issued) and shorts/ pants/ capris during all work hours in the athletic training room and practices.
C. NO SOFFEE (or any other type of cheerleader-type) SHORTS- EVER. Shorts will be long enough to cover all appropriate body parts, even while student athletic trainer is bending down (i.e. no daisy dukes, etc.). Shorts/ pants/ capris will not be too tight.*
*Too tight will be at the discretion of the Co-Head Athletic Trainers
D. You are expected to wear the appropriate collared/ game shirt (issued) and shorts/ pants/ capris (not skirts) during all work hours during athletic events and games. The shirt should be tucked in (all the way around) at all times.
E. No open toed or platform shoes will be worn for any practice or any game or pre game set up…at all. All shoes must be athletic shoes.
F. You are expected to wear khaki or black shorts/ pants/ capris (not skirts) for all games and any other athletic event. This means no jeans (not even khaki or black ones).
G. Some coaches for indoor sports will ask that you wear nice “Sunday dress” clothing for games, you will expected to follow your coaches wishes in this situation. The Co-Head Athletic Trainers define “Sunday dress” as nice slacks and a shirt/ blouse/ sweater with nice shoes. (but still no open toed shoes or skirts).
H. No shirt (t-shirt or collared) should ever be tied up in any way (sleeves or tail).
I. The student athletic trainer will not tear, cut, or otherwise destroy the integrity of any piece of issued clothing.
J. Rebel Athletic Training clothing should only be worn by student athletic trainers. This clothing should not be lent or given to students not accepted into the Athletic Training program. If a Co-Head Athletic Trainer sees a non-student athletic trainer in rebel athletic training clothing, that clothing will be taken from that individual (with the aid of a Vice- Principal). The owner of said clothing will be removed from program. If your rebel athletic raining clothing is stolen, let a Co-Head Athletic Trainer know as soon as possible.
K. Student will be asked to address the outfit or be sent home. If student fails/refuse to correct the problem, then it will be considered a no show and a no call and points will be deducted accordingly. Student will not work a game if they are in dress code violation. Excessive dress code violations could lead to dismissal from the program.
L. You are expected to keep your hair neatly groomed.
M. Please make sure clothing is clean and neat (not full of wrinkles).
N. Belts are a must with khakis (shorts/pants).
IV. The Student Athletic Trainers and Coaches
1. The most important relationship is the relationship between you and the coaches. Learning to get along with the coaches will keep you out of trouble.
2. It is the responsibility of the student athletic trainer to communicate with the coach of their assigned sport for scheduling issues, game/ trip departure times, etc.
3. NEVER discuss injury situations with the coaches. Player information should come from the Co-Head Athletic Trainers only.
4. If you have a problem with a coach, DO NOT TRY to handle it yourself, contact the Co-Head Athletic Trainers and ask for their assistance in the situation.
V. Working Hours
A. You will be requested to report to the training room on your assigned days and times.
B. You should check the work schedule every day.
C. Football is not the only sport that needs health care. We are responsible for ALL UIL sports. You are expected to work hard and enthusiastically with all sports.
D. You will be expected to work as late as midnight in some cases, make sure to use of your free time to maintain academic excellence.
E. You may be requested to work during some school holidays. Be prepared to do your fair share. The schedule will be as fair as possible in regards to family trips and other situations.
F. You and your parents must notify either Coach Brox and/or Coach Penka if you are going to be late or you will be absent due to another conflict. Too many late appearances, no shows without a call, and/or being sent home too many times are grounds for dismissal from the program.
G. Coach Brox or Coach Penka MUST be informed when you are going to miss school due to illness, doctor appointment, etc.
VI. Procedure to Follow for the Care of and Injured Athlete
A. Remember, as a student athletic trainer, you are here to aid in the daily operations of the athletic training room. Also, you are here to learn about the field of athletic training and sports medicine, in addition to performing basic first aid/ CPR/ and treatments as dictated by the Co-Head Athletic Trainers. You are not a Certified or Licensed Athletic Trainer; therefore you must not overstep your bounds with treatments, rehabilitation, or evaluations. NEVER make the decision whether or not a player is able to continue play. Let the coach know your findings and then let the coach make the decision if a Certified or Licensed Athletic Trainer is not available. Ultimately NEVER make a decision on an athlete
B. Medical Emergency- EAP is activated there will be little or no time to consult with the physicians or Co-Head Athletic Trainers before taking action.
1. Procedures: The student athletic trainer in charge should:
a. Attend to the athlete immediately and recognize any serious signs of injury.
b. Contact a Co-Head Athletic Trainer and give them the details of the injury.
C. Injury Which Will Require Medical Attention, but is NOT of the Type Requiring Immediate Emergency Treatment
1. Procedures:
a. Student Athletic Trainer in charge should perform any necessary first aid
b. Contact a Co-Head Athletic Trainer and give all the details. Be sure to note all symptoms and the time of occurrence. A Co-Head Athletic Trainer will then instruct you as to what to do with the injured athlete.
D. Confidentiality of Injury Status
ALL INFORMATION REGARDING PLAYER INJURY STATUS IS CONSIDERED CONFIDENTIAL, AND SHOULD NOT BE THE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS AT ANY TIME. THIS INCLUDE NO PICTURES OR SOCIAL MEDIA AT ANYTIME. STUDENT WILL BE DISMISSED FROM PROGRAM IMMIDATELY.
VII. Academics
A. You must maintain a minimum passing average of 70% prior to participation in any extracurricular event sponsored by the school district.
B. Work in the athletic training room must not and will not become more important than academic work. If you cannot make work assignments because you need more time to study, or other valid reasons, the Co-Head Athletic Trainers need to be contacted well in advance.
C. UIL grade eligibility
D. If a student fails two 6 weeks in a single school year they are excused from the program. Student may reapply once grades are constantly passing.
VIII. Game Assignments
A. Students must work all assigned sports, refusal to work assigned games/ sports may lead to removal from the program
B. Students are responsible for knowing their schedules and making the necessary arrangements
IX. Work Habits
A. You should be to work promptly- the Co-Head Athletic Trainers will let you know when you should arrive.
B. School rules apply during the athletic period as well as during practices and games.
C. Be professional in manners, dress, and attitude
X. Offices
A. The Co-Head Athletic Trainer’s offices will be strictly off limits to athletes and student trainers unless otherwise permitted by the Co-Head Athletic Trainer(s) for specific business.
B. Conversations that are held in the Co-Head Athletic Trainer’s office are confidential unless necessary action needs to be taken.
C. Telephone calls should be short and limited to immediate business, not personal or lengthy.
XI. Student Athletic Trainer Dismissal
A. Grounds for Early Dismissal from the Athletic Training Program Include:
1. Negligence of an athletic training room responsibility.
2. Negligence of a practice and/ or a game responsibility.
3. Failure to comply with the policies set forth in the Student Athletic Trainer Handbook.
4. Failure to comply with school policies and regulations.
5. Constant failing Grades
6. Attempting to perform any type of medical or therapeutic procedure that is outside of the student’s capability and/ or is illegal (i.e. performing ultrasound, EMS, etc.)
7. Deliberate and/or blatant refusal to adhere to instructions given to you by a Co-Head Athletic Trainer or coach.
8. Any circumstance as seen fit for dismissal by the Co-Head Athletic Trainers.
B. As seen necessary by the Co-Head Athletic Trainers, a student who is in violation of any of the above standards will be consulted privately and given an opportunity to change the infraction or be dismissed.
C. The Co-Head Athletic Trainers will notify a student of dismissal in private. An explanation will be given for why the dismissal is necessary with a parent phone call.
GRADING RUBRIC
Practices:
No call No show= -10
No show w/ call w/o advanced notice (Minimum 24 hours) = -5
No show w/ call w/ advanced notice (more than 24 hours) = -1
Games:
No show w/ call w/o advanced notice (Minimum 24 hours) = -6
No show w/ call w/ advanced notice (more than 24 hours) = -2
Must switch with another RATS member
Dress Code Violation:
Out of Dress Code= -5
Missing 2 or more practices per week= No game for that week & -10 for the game
Missing 2 games with no notification= termination from the RATS program
Miscellaneous deductions -5
Opportunities for making up deductions:
Working extra games (not including Varsity FB) = +2
Working extra road sub varsity games= +4
Morning treatment assistance (6:30 a.m.)= +5
Saturday morning treatments (9:00 a.m.)= +5
Failing grades at Report Card (6 weeks) = will work practices but not allowed to work games (UIL rules)
