BACKGROUND

The UNICEF New Talent Unit is seeking support by a professional consultant or a team of professional consultants (contracted individually) to support the career counseling of young professionals as part of its two main career development programmes: the New and Emerging Talent Initiative (NETI) and Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme.

Both programmes are an entry point for dynamic professionals interested in an international career with UNICEF. Over a two year period participants work actively in a multicultural environment within the development and humanitarian arenas, while contributing to delivering results for children over a two year period. They are assigned in country and regional offices as well as Headquarter locations in UNICEFs various functional areas. During their assignment, they undergo an orientation programme in New York Headquarters as well as receive Coaching and Mentoring sessions.

Neither of the two programmes has any expectancy of a secure position with UNICEF at the end of the two or three year assignment. However, the New Talent unit has set as objective to improve the retention rate of both programmes and developed a new retention strategy which starts at the 15 months into the assignment, when participants are allowed to apply for UNICEF positions.

TASK

As part of the overall retention strategy, this particular assignment is to provide UN specific career counseling services in the form of individual CV/Resume cliniques, competency based mock interviews and advice on written applications/cover letters.

Every NETI and JPO reaching 15 months on assignment with UNICEF will be offered an individual mock interview and a CV/Resume writing session to build on the online learning services.

DELIVERABLES

Until 31.12.2015 the consultant is to provide remotely via phone/Skype or in person:

  • CV/Resume writing session (1 hour per JPO/NETI)
  • Competency-based mock interviews (1 hour per JPO/NETI)

The target group JPOs and NETIs are based in the America/Central America regions, Europe/Central Europe/Africa/Middle East regions, and South Asia/South East Asia/Pacific regions. The actual number of sessions depends on the consultant’s location and ability to cover all regions or only particular regions.The task can be divided by several individual consultants across the world, will be contracted individually.

  • 10 in the America/Central America regions
  • 45 in the Europe/Central Europe/Africa/Middle East regions
  • 10 in the South Asia/South East Asia/Pacificregions

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCES

a) Education

  • Advanced university degree, preferably in Social Sciences, Education, Counselling, Psychology, Human Resources, English, Journalism or related field.

b) Work experience

  • A minimum of sevenyears of progressively responsible experience incareer counselling are required.
  • International experience, particularly within the UN, development and humanitarian context, is considered a distinct asset.
  • Experience in counseling young professionals is considered an asset.
  • Certified professional resume writers (CPRW) and certified employment interview professionals (CEIP) are highly desired.
  • Experience in advising on UN specific personal profiles/CV writing mechanism and competency-based interview skills are required.

c) Languages

Fluency in English required. Knowledge in an additional UN language is considered an asset.
