Phonemic Awareness

Retell

Goal

Students will read a variety of texts and be able to retell the major events or

information accurately.

Basic Center

Materials

  • A variety of texts from read alouds, shared reading, guided reading or interactive writing.

Preparation

Teacher will:

  • Provide a variety of texts (read alouds, shared readings, guided readings, interactively written texts).
  • Organize texts so that students can easily access them.
  • Model procedures for retelling during whole and small group instruction. Provide opportunities for students to participate in retellings and receive feedback.

Procedures

Students will:

  • Read selected text either alone or with a partner.
  • Retell key events or important information from the text to another person orally.

Beyond the Basic Center

Additional Center Ideas:

  1. Provide students with flannel boards and flannel pieces that correspond to favorite stories that have been read aloud. Students work alone or with a partner to manipulate the pieces as they retell the important events of the story.
  2. Provide students with texts from prior guided reading lessons. They then use a piece of paper that has been divided into four sections and illustrate key points of the texts. Students use their illustrations to help them as they orally retell the new information to one another.
  3. Provide students with a variety of art media (crayons, markers, paint, glitter, sticks) to create props, setting or characters from the text. They use the materials they create to retell the important information to a small audience of their peers. Students may work on this project alone or with a partner.
  4. After reading a story, students record their retelling of the story using a tape recorder. They then listen to their retelling and use a rubric to assess their performance.
  5. After reading expository text, students create a graphic organizer that displays key information. Students can then use this graphic organizer to retell what they have learned in an oral presentation.
