AGH & Fairview Manor Olympic Games running from August 11-15

As the eyes of the world turn to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the residents and staff of the Almonte General Hospital and Fairview Manor (AGH/FVM) are joining in the fun with their own version of the event.

The AGH/FVM Olympics begin August 11 with the opening ceremonies, featuring a motivational speech about sports participation by Dan Wicklum.

The ceremonies also include the parade of flags and the announcement of teams.

The teams, which are identified by different colours and specially designed shirts, include the Manor’s home units and the AGH/FVM Office Administration, Life Enrichment, Management, Kitchen, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy, Rosamond Wing staff and Emergency Room/Lab/Radiology departments.

Events for residents include a potato-on-spoon race, hoop target toss, balloon batting, tennis ball bounce, and relays.

Staff events include a tire rolling relay, wheelchair/walker/cane relay, and wheeled recliner chair race.

All events will be held inside and outside Fairview Manor.

The closing ceremonies are on August 15, beginning with a barbecue for staff and residents at 11 a.m. and awards presentations at 2 p.m.

Cake and tea will be served and local singer Lauren Hall will entertain.

That night, the AGH/FVM Olympics will close with a fireworks display in front of the Manor at 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Sponsored by the FVM Auxiliary, volunteers and Life Enrichment Department, the Games’ goals are to have fun and encourage physical activity, promote teamwork and unity among staff and residents, promote residents’ self esteem, give residents and staff a sense of accomplishment and value and to celebrate the Beijing Olympics.

Fairview Manor held its first Olympic Games in August 2004 to coincide with the Summer Games in Athens.

“There has been a lot of enthusiasm among the Hospital and Manor residents and staff for our Olympic Games,” said Sheila Lefebvre of the Manor’s Life Enrichment Department. “We’re going to have lots of fun.”
