SUNNATS OF DRESSING

1. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) loved white clothing. (Tirmizi and Ibn Majah)

2. When putting on any garment such as; kurta, shirt, jubbah, etc. put on the right sleeve first, then the left. Similarly, when putting on the pants, put on the right leg first, then the left. (Tirmizi; Chapter on clothing)

3. The pants, lungi, kurta, etc. should be kept above the ankles. Allah Ta’ala becomes displeased with a person who allows his garment to hang below the ankles.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa salam) said that Allah Ta’ala will not look with mercy at that person who wears his garments below the ankles. (This applies to males only.) (Bukhari and Muslim)

4. Recite the following Du’a when wearing new clothes:

أَلْحَمْدُ لَلّهِ الَّذِى كَسَانِيْ هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَ رَزَقَنِيْهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَ لا قُوّة

ALHAMDU LILLAA-HIL-LADHEE KASAANEE HAADHAATH THAUBA WA RAZAQA-NEEHI MIN GHAYRI HAULIM MINNEE WA LAA QUWWAH.

Translation:

All praises are for Allah Ta`ala, Who has clothed me with this garment and has provided it for me, without any effort and strength on my part.

NOTE: Anyone who reads this du`a when wearing a new garment will have all their previous sins forgiven.

(Abu Daud, Ibn Majah, Tirmizi, and Ahmad)

5.) It is Sunnah to wear a Kufi (hat) under the Imaamah (turban). It is contrary to the Sunnah to wear an Imaamah without a Kufi (hat).

(Mirqat; Vol. 8, Pg. 250)

6.) Rasulullah (salallahu alaihi wa sallam) liked the qamees (kurta/long shirt which goes past the kness) out of all the articles of clothing. (Tirmizi and Abu Daud)

7.) To wear a black turban is also Sunnah. To leave the (Shamlah) at the back is Sunnah. (Nasa’i)

8). It is sunnah to wear a qalansuwwah (topi, kufi, etc.). (Mirqat; Vol. 8, Pg. 246)

(Tirmizi; Chapter on clothing)

11.) When removing the shoes, first remove the left and then the right. (Abu Daud, Bukhari and Muslim)

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS’ALUKA MIN KHAYRIHEE WA KHAYRI MAA HUWA LAHU. WA A’UDHU BIKA MIN SHARRIHEE WA SHARRI MAA HUWA LAHU.
