Practicing The Way: Become Like Jesus

How do we change to become like Jesus?

The promise of the New Testament is nothing short of full-on transformation, but so many of us feel a disconnect between that promise and our reality. Is change really possible? The answer is: yes, but the odds are, it’s not what you think. To become like Jesus, you must be increasingly possessed and permeated by the character traits of Jesus. Allow yourself to be transformed, from the inside out, as you work to become like Jesus.

Scriptures:

·  Luke 6:39-40

·  II Corinthians 3:18

·  Romans 12:1-2

·  James 1:2-3

Before you listen to the audio or watch the video, take a few moments to consider a couple of questions:

1.  What are the three goals that an apprentice of Jesus orders his life around?

2.  What do you think becoming like Jesus will mean for you?

Here are a several things to listen for and reflect on in this teaching:

1.  What type of change is being talked about?

2.  John Mark spoke about how Portland impacts his listeners. How does Wenatchee shape us?

3.  Two Myths:

a.  All you need to do is know the Bible.

b.  You don’t need to do anything. It’s all God.

4.  Consider the elements of Intentional Spiritual Formation.

5.  How does community impact us?

After listening and before your group meets give some thought to:

1.  Consider the ways that you are being Unintentionally Formed?

2.  What do you think about these sayings:

a.  Let go and let God.

b.  With Him we can’t. Without us, He won’t.

3.  How would you explain the Intentional Spiritual Formation Diagram?

4.  Have you had an experience where community has helped you to know yourself better?

5.  “You can’t microwave character.”

Practical:

Did you try spending 10 minutes in silence? If so, how did it go?

Ask yourself: Who are you becoming? Plot out the trajectory of your character arc out 25 or 30 years. (Review video 43:39 – to the end)

Consider putting to memory Romans 12:1
