LAB #4: FINDING VECTOR RESULTANTS BY BOTH GRAPHICAL AND MATHEMATICAL METHODS
1) Write down the purpose, and method and materials for this lab.
2) Your data will be the actual vector diagrams that you will neatly construct in lab and complete at home. You may use loose leaf or the plain white paper supplied. You need a sharp pencil for your diagrams.
3) Although the graphical solutions will be obtained by measurements made on your diagrams, you will also solve the same vector problems using mathematics. For all math solutions you must show all work done in order to obtain answers by this method.
4) Your final results for the vector resultant problems must be in a neat labeled chart (with units), that shows your answers obtained by both the (1) graphical, and (2) mathematical methods.
5) In your conclusion, evaluate your results obtained graphically, by comparing those results to the more accurate mathematically calculated solutions. Also discuss vectors and their resultants in general, and the differences between, and advantages of, each method used.
PLOT THE FOLLOWING VECTORS USING THE SCALE SUGGESTED ON THE BOARD IN THE LAB:
1) A force of 40 newtons East
2) A velocity of 25 m/s South
3) A displacement of 20 km NorthEast
4) A force of 30 newtons SouthWest
5) A velocity of 20 km/hr, at an angle of 30 degrees North of East
6) A displacement of 40 km, at an angle of 60 degrees North of West
7) A force of 20 newtons, at an angle of 30 degrees South of East
FIND THE RESULTANT VECTORS BY USING (1)GRAPHICAL and (2)MATHEMATICAL METHODS
1) Two displacement vectors, if each one is 15 km North
2) A force of 10 newtons East, and a force of 18 newtons West
3) A boat’s velocity of 12km/hr Northeast, and add a current in the river that has a velocity of 3 km/hr Southwest.
4) A force of 10 newtons North, and a force of 10 newtons East
5) A force of 18 newtons South, and a force of 24 newtons East
6) A displacement of 6 km North, and a displacement of 8 km West
7) A plane’s velocity of 120 km/hr East, and add a wind velocity acting on the plane that is equal to 50 km/hr South
