ELEVATOR NEWS

After many weeks of hard work by the Trustees, we are pleased to share with the church that we have secured a grant (which does not have to be repaid) from the Ann Arbor District for half of the cost of a new handicapped elevator, and along with a large generous memorial gift by an individual, along with other generous gifts, the new elevator is being ordered and plans are being coordinated for the construction work for the new elevator to begin. We ask for your patience as the lobby area is under construction, and be on the lookout for a Sunday celebration where we will dedicate the new elevator and finally get to worship again permanently in our beautiful sanctuary. If you have any questions, please ask a Trustee.

FROM PASTOR KATIE

Beloved,

June is the month for graduations, weddings, end of school year parties and confirmations– all kinds of endings and beginnings. But this year, I’m mindful of vacation planning in June. I guess that’s because I’m really looking forward to time away with my husband and children this summer. If you know anything about me, you know that I miss my children – our family is always running in different directions and vacation is the time when we can have uninterrupted time together. So, this summer in particular, I am looking forward to carving out time with all of us together – in one place – to relish being a family without interruptions.

Summers are made for time with family, time with friends, time alone. TIME!

Already some of you have been off for vacations and to see family and had graduations and baby showers and family weddings. Summers and vacations are sort of like Sabbath – only extended. God built Sabbath into creation – “and on the 7th day God rested.” And the 10 commandments express the same intent, “honor the Sabbath.” God built rest into our week, each and every week – so that we might have a rhythm of work, rest, work, rest.

Sometimes Sabbath and vacation and rest are in short supply for some of our First UMC friends and families. However, God STILL desires for us to find time to rest – no, to MAKE time to rest – each and every week. But don’t forget that there are still lots of things going on this summer at First UMC. Be sure to join our summer book group that will culminate in watching the movie based on the book, the Case for Christ. This summer First UMC is going to have a summer movies sermon series, where we are going to watch some great movies with our neighbors and friends on Fridays and hear some of the scripture truths in the movies in Sunday worship. And we are really excited about our upcoming summer VBS. And summer is the time when we start working on and gearing up for a great fall at First UMC.

So – what are YOU planning for your summer or fall vacation? We have wonderful biking and walking trails here at Sterling State Park and along the Riverwalk, we have beaches and a great Historical Museum and the River Raisin battlefield and picnic spots and a host of ways to rest and relax right here. How are you going to fulfill God’s command and more importantly, take care of your body and soul this summer? Hopefully with work, rest, work, rest.

May you be blessed and be a blessing!

Pastor Katie
