FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members;

Thank you for taking the time to read our latest news update from school as this busy Term 2 continues.

We would like to acknowledge that Reconciliation Week, which began on Sunday 26th May with National Sorry Day, has taken place during Wk 7. At Glenella SS we recognise the cultural backgrounds of all our families and we are happy to work with all cultural groups within our school community at any time.

Last week saw a group of hard working staff and family members participate in our Under 8’s Day activities. It was wonderful to see so many adults join our students and staff to help make this day so positive. A wonderful variety of activities was on offer and it was also pleasing to see some of our older students showcase some of their talents at the welcome that I participated in, and throughout the day with setting up and packing up etc. Thank you to everyone involved, I am positive our students will look forward to this event again in 2014.

Last weekend a determined group of parents met to participate in our Term 2 Working Bee. It was again pleasing to see parents and students participating so eagerly. A number of tasks were successfully completed including – cleaning up and mulching the garden in the Prep Carpark, cleaning up the garden adjacent to the school gate and tennis court, pruning of the gardens

around the Administration building and classrooms, preparing the vegetable gardens for a new crop, mulching the bush tucker garden, whipper snipping fence lines and erecting the Eileen Finch Library sign to name but a few of the achievements on the day! Thank you one and all for your valuable contribution to our school.

On Monday night we had our monthly P&C Meeting, again with a pleasing number of families participating and some delicious ‘home-bake’ to share! Participation in P&C is a valuable way for families to have input into school decision making and a great time to come together and discuss a number of school-related topics. At Glenella SS this always takes place with lots of laughs and outstanding co-operation. During my Principal’s Address I am able to outline activities and celebrate successes that regularly take place in our school. I often seek support from the P&C, whether it is financial or human, and this month I am seeking a group of willing volunteers who can assist with covering the new classroom readers that the school recently purchased. Anyone who can help is asked to meet with Cheryle Corbett (Teacher Aide) in the Library from lunchtime each Friday for the next couple of weeks. Cheryle will quickly run you through the process of covering these resources and as the old saying goes “many hands will make light work” of this task. On behalf of all the teachers and students who are using these valuable resources we thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

A number of date claimers should be noted, including – TERM 2, Michael Salmon (author-illustrator) visit and book signing on 5/6/13, Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday on 10/6/13, Fire Ed visit on 11/6/13, our school Athletics Carnival on 18/6/13, Mackay Show Holiday on 20/6/13 and Term 2 Behaviour Rewards Day on 21/6/13. TERM 3, 15/7/13 P&C Meeting, 26/7/13 P&C Trivia Night and 4/8/13 our next Working Bee.

Until we next chat, please remember my door is always open should you need to discuss anything with me, take care and I look forward to seeing your smiling faces at our wonderful school.

Cheers

Rod Wood

UNDER 8’S DAY

Under 8's Day

On Friday 24th May, all of Glenella's under 8's participated in a morning full of fun activities, performances by Dallas from the Sensory Circus and Brooke and Reece Naylor with their Irish Dancing. Some of the great activities were play dough, goop, shaving cream painting, water play, mousercise, kite making, puppet making and biscuit decorating.

A VERY, VERY big thank you to all the parents who donated items for this successful event, as well as all the wonderful helpers on the day. Another person who deserves a huge thank you is Kim Mitchell who came along to help with the face painting. Without all the parent and community support, activities like this would prove difficult to run. The children had a great time and it was wonderful to see the fun they were all having.

Thanks P-3 Staff
