Class Time: Work site varies. Course must meet 150 hours of mentor/instructor contact time.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course continues the development of skills in the areas of steering and suspension, brakes, electrical and electronics, and engine performance. Course includes the development of skills in basic automotive maintenance, service and repair. Students are introduced to diagnosis of systems and concerns, causes and correction of problems. Advanced course has emphasis on workplace skills and career choices. Critical thinking skills and shop safety are emphasized. Course includes applied academics of math, science and language arts. Minimum performance requirements for this course are based on successful completion according to the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation Automotive Program Standards. (NATEF)
PREREQUISITES: 47.571 and 47.572, ValidGa. drivers permit, Clean MVR, Able to pass drug screening and employer requirements. Recommendation of AST instructor, High School principal and counselor.
COURSE OBJECTIVES, upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Locate, understand, and interpret written information in a variety of formats.
2. Perform and apply numerical concepts and calculations, and solve problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques using mental, manual, and technological methods.
3. Use proper repair procedures as outlined in technical manuals.
4. Maintain safety health and environmental standards.
5. Demonstrate and understand proper work ethics.
6. Be able to perform and apply math by using mental manual and electronic methods.
7. Communicate thoughts and information accurately in writing.
8. Demonstrate the ability to accurately understand and interpret written information.
9. Create, combine and connect ideas and information.
10. Receive, comprehend, interpret and respond to verbal messages.
11. Present thoughts and messages to listeners orally.
12. Take initiative to accomplish task in a timely matter.
13. Prevent, identify, or solve problems with technical or electronic equipment.
14. Be able to demonstrate how to properly inspect and repair brake system components.
15. Be able to demonstrate how to properly inspect and repair suspension components.
16. Be able to demonstrate how to properly perform basic engine performance test.
17. Be able to perform electrical repairs and test.
INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY METHODS: One on one training, demonstration, and mentor/instructor guidance.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS, MATERIALS, TOOLS BY THE STUDENT:
Pen or pencil, Paper, Floppy disc and 3-ring binder AYES work Journal.
The student will maintain work journal and passport.
MATERIAL USED IN THE Work Place: Service manuals, computers, repair software, hand tools, air powered tools, electric tools, jacks and automotive lifts, automobiles, digital multimeter, system analyzers, and precision measurement tools.
EVALUATION: The student will be evaluated on daily workperformance, work ethics and customer service objectives. Rubric for course will be the AYES student evaluation and HHS work ethics evaluation
CONSULTATION/COUNSELING/ASSISTANCE: Supplemental instruction can be provided, as needed, on an individual basis at the instructor’s discretion.
GRADING SYSTEM: Students will be graded in three areas. Each will count 30% of final grade. These three are Work Ethics, also known as Attitude; Knowledge or Aptitude of the subject being taught, and Skills or Activity. Mentor/instructor observation and assessment of hands on job performance will evaluate these three areas. Work journal is essential for 10% of final grade. Intern’s work will be graded on initiative and use of available time, quality of work, customer service, problem solving, care and use of tools, use of materials and test equipment, neatness and safety practices.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: The attendance policy of the intern’s worksite will be followed. It is important that the student meet the mentor’s/instructor’s expectations regarding the work place. If the student is late for work or absent the employer may terminate the employment. Note: Failure to complete 150 hours of documented contact hours will result in no grade for course.
SAFETY POLICY: Due to the possible dangers associated with automotive shop, additional rules to the student handbook will be followed in the automotive workplace. These rules will be covered in detail during the shop safety lessons at the beginning of the work site visits. All students must wear the appropriate clothing and safety glasses to be able to work in the shop area.
OTHER RELEVANT POLICIES/PROCEDURES: The internship application contains procedures and information vital to the success of the automotive student. It is requested that each student and caregiver review the application and handbook in depth before signing the agreement.
