Periodic Table Analogy Experiment

In 1869 Dmitri Mendeleev developed a periodic table of the known elements. Mendeleev was able to use his periodic table to predict the characteristic properties of undiscovered elements. In this experiment you will develop a periodic table and use your table to predict the properties of a missing “element.”

Your instructor has given you 22 of the 24 rectangular pieces contained in this kit. Each piece has six properties. Your goal is to develop a periodic table such that there is a pattern to each property. From the patterns discovered you can predict the location and properties of the missing piece.

1.The six properties that distinguish one puzzle piece from another are:

1.4.

2.5.

3.6.

As you have learned, Mendeleev used atomic weight to place the elements in a continuous row and noticed some properties reoccurred every eighth element. He then moved the elements into rows of eight so that similar properties fell into columns.

2.Which of the three properties listed above could be used by two different people to place the

“element” cards in exactly the same order?

1.

2.

3.

Try placing the pieces in order by each of the three properties you have listed above. Then look carefully for patterns in the remaining properties. If you do find that some properties reoccur along the row at regular intervals, organize the pieces into a chart so that the properties fall into rows and columns.

3.Look at the patterns in the cards and complete the following: Follow the example given:

The ( property) follows a (n)(up/down and left/right or diagonal) pattern. The pattern is (be

specific) ______

A.The colors follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is ______

______

______

B.The stars follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is ______

______

______

C.The top numbers follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is ___

______

______

D.The holes follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is ______

______

______

E.The bottom numbers follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is

______

______

F.The notches follow a (n) ______pattern. The pattern is ______

______

______

Your instructor has removed two pieces from the experiment kit. From you chart, predict the properties of the missing piece.

4.The first missing piece had the following characteristics.

Top Number = ______

Bottom Number = ______

Number of Stars = ______

Number of Notches = ______

Number of Holes =______

Approximate Color = ______

5.The second missing piece had the following characteristics.

Top Number = ______

BottomNumberRange = ______

Number of Stars = ______

Number of Notches = ______

Number of Holes =______

Approximate Color = ______
