Three Non-Executive Directors Reappointed to the Council of the Scottish Social Services Council
The Minister for Children and Young People today announced the reappointment of Lorraine Brown, Harry Stevenson and Joyce Lishman as Non-Executive Directors of the Council of the Scottish Social Services Council.
The SSSC is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body established under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001. It is responsible for improving the quality of social services and protecting the public by strengthening and supporting the professionalism of the workforce and raising standards of practice through regulation. The Social Services Workforce covers more than 189,000 people.
Lorraine Brown
Lorraine has a background in HR and Project Management, predominantly in the private sector and has CIPD membership. She was regional manager for the Falkirk and West Lothian council areas during the last census. In addition to her role with the SSSC, she is a lay member of the Employment Tribunal and Convenor of the Appointments Committee for the General Teaching Council of Scotland. She is also a member of the Equalities, Law and Rights of Audience committees with the Law Society of Scotland and is also a member of Alzheimers Scotland.
Harry Stevenson
Harry began his career as a trainee Social Worker in Rutherglen in 1975 before going on to complete his professional training in 1978. In 1996 Harry graduated from Strathclyde University with an MSc (Advanced Professional Studies) and in 2007 the Diploma in Public Sector Collaboration Leadership from Lancaster University.
He is an Executive Director and Chief Officer of the Health and Care Partnership. Since his appointment, work has been undertaken to consolidate and develop improvement in performance, with a particular focus on personalisation of services for children, adults and older people.
Harry is also a member of the Corporate Management Team for NHS Lanarkshire Health Board.
Joyce Lishman
Joyce is an Emeritus Professor in Social Work at the Robert Gordon University. She has extensive experience and knowledge in social work, social care and relevant education and training. She has a particular interest in practise learning and will shortly be publishing a third edition of the Handbook for Practise Learning and Social Work and Social Care. She is committed to the work of the voluntary sector and in particular childcare.
All appointments will be for three years. Lorraine Brown and Harry Stevenson’s’ will run from 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2018, and Joyce Lishman’s will run from 1st October 2015 to 31st September 2018.
This reappointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £8,222 for a time commitment of approximately five days per month.
Lorraine Brown currently holds a lay member position with the Employment Tribunal Service with a remuneration of £180 per day. Harry Stevenson currently holds a Director position with Social Work Scotland which is unremunerated.
This reappointment is regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. All three members have declared no political activity.
