Join in this revealing conversation with a panel of artists and sitters who have each been winners and losers in their attempt to ascend the Archibald Prize peak. Portraiture expert Dr Vivien Gaston will lead the debate about whether it’s better for an artist to be rejected or accepted by the official judges. How do artists stay true to themselves as well as challenge the viewer? Can an artist be edgy and fashionable at the same time? Sketching in the Gallery: responding to salon portraits

Sharpen a pencil and be inspired by the works on display in the Salon des Refuses. Sit up close to your favorite portrait and explore mark making, tone, light and creative gestural drawing applications. Artist and MPRG Educator Jill Anderson will also be available to give guidance. Sketching the Gallery is a great way to meet other drawing enthusiasts and to develop your skills. Artists of all abilities are welcome, all materials will be provided.

Jennifer Riddell

Local Red Hill artist Jennifer Riddell’s decision to pursue her passion for painting came after the sad loss of her sister. It was this experience that changed the way she saw and experiences the landscape; in it she found both spiritual renewal and creative inspiration. Jennifer has been the recipient of a number of art prizes and in 2016 two of her paintings were acquired for the Parliament House Art Collection.
