Purpose of Job:

This is a new role within the Finance team which will contribute to the development of a sustainable and efficient financial model to secure the long-term future of the charity. This role will manage and deliver an organisation-wide management information function to contribute to sound strategic and operational decision-making.

Main Tasks:

1. To deliver accurate, timely and meaningful management accounts on a monthly basis to the Finance Director for the use of the Senior Management Team and the Board;

2. To plan, manage and deliver the annual budgeting process to be agreed and in place for 1 April. To put in place a new accounting system based budgeting and reporting system and tailor it to the requirements of Thames Hospice.

3. To support the business to provide quarterly forecasts and forecast updates as part of the annual budgeting cycle;

4. To act as a financial Partner to the Fundraising and Retail teams to support the development of a sustainable business model for the future of the charity. This will include understanding the ‘business’ to provide expert financial advice and information to support effective decision-making across the organisation by providing expert financial information, advice and analysis.

5. To support the Finance Director in the production of the statutory accounts by producing and reconciling key schedules and financial information to audit standard;

6. To provide key financial input and support to projects and programmes as required;

7. To line-manage the Finance Assistant and Bookkeeper on a day to day basis;

8. To oversee the Gift Aid process from end-to-end across Retail and Fundraising to maximise claims to HMRC on a quarterly basis;

9. To attend and produce management information for the Finance and Investment Committee and Revenue Generation Committee as required.

Person Specifications

Please note that all criteria is essential unless otherwise stated

1. Specialist Knowledge and Experience

  • Strong experience of management accounting in a medium sized organisation, experience of working in a charity and/or retail environment is desirable but not essential;
  • A recognised professional accountancy qualification (CIMA, ACCA, ACA) or equivalent. Part-qualified applicants with experience will also be considered. Study support for continuing with professional qualifications may be available for an exceptional candidate;
  • Experience of financial analysis, modelling and budgeting/forecasting;
  • Ability to present complex financial information in a meaningful and understandable way to a non-finance audience;
  • Ability to embed sound financial management principles across the organisation and take a key role in improving financial “literacy” and confidence with managers and colleagues;
  • Experience of statutory accounts production or supporting the statutory accounts process;
  • Experience of taking an active role in the improvement and streamlining of finance processes;

  • Excellent Excel skills in order to deliver financial modelling, analysis and management information;

  • Experience of using an accounting system to extract reports and key financial information;
  • Experience of using IT software to budget and forecast for an organisation with a range of activities.
