SUBJECT: SITUATION REPORT ON SEVERE STORMS/FLOODING #12
OVERVIEW – A letter requesting President Bush approve federal disaster assistance for 12 counties impacted by severe storms and record rains was sent today to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In the recently conducted damage assessments, FEMA recorded 5,298 homes impacted by flooding and more than $9 million in damage to public infrastructure.
In the declaration request from the Governor, the State of Wisconsin has requested federal aid for individuals and businesses in Columbia, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Jefferson, Kenosha, Ozaukee, and Winnebago Counties. In addition, disaster aid for local governments was requested for Columbia, Crawford, Fond du Lac, Grant, Kenosha, Ozaukee, Vernon, Clark, Dodge, Green Lake, and Winnebago Counties. We are hopeful that our request for federal disaster assistance will be addressed promptly and our Congressional delegation is working together in support of this desire. Flooding Update - Major flooding continues in portions of Green Lake, Ozaukee and Winnebago Counties. Last night, Winnebago County requested an additional 30,000 sandbags from Wisconsin Emergency Management. The National Weather Service continues to issue flood warnings to several rivers including the Fox River, Beaver Dam River, Rock River, Baraboo River, and the Wisconsin River. Residents and officials continue to sandbag around homes and other structures between Eureka and Omro as the Fox River continues to rise. There is a chance for additional rainfall in the area, which could create additional problems.
Dam Safety – Department of Natural Resources continues to work with local communities in monitoring dams that may be stressed due to heavy water flow and debris. Last night, WEM approved a Civil Air Patrol mission to provide an aerial view of the Omro and Waukau Dams located in Winnebago County. While water levels and pressure is high on these dams, officials believe there is no immediate threat of dam failure.
WHEDA Housing Assistance- Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority is providing $2,500 to Fond du Lac County and $5,000 to Jefferson County to help with the costs associated with emergency housing for displaced residents associated with the flooding.
Road Closures – Road closures are reported on these major highways:
WIS 49 Green Lake County
WIS 146 Columbia County
