Virginia’s Olympics brings Six Competitions to the New River Valley

Celebrating 25 years of competition & active lifestyles

The 2014 Subway Commonwealth Games, organized by Virginia Amateur Sports, has six sports on the schedule for the New River Valley area, there are close to 60 sports offered in this year’s Games, where participants will compete to earn a bronze, silver or gold medal.

-  Swimming – Long Course Swimming – June 21, Christiansburg Aquatic Center

-  USSSA Baseball - June 27-30, Harkrader Sports Complex

-  Bowling - July 18-20, NRV Super Bowl

-  Canoeing – July 20, Giles County

-  Kayaking – July 20, Giles County

-  Gymnastics - November - Virginia Techniques Gymnastics

New sports added this year to the 25th anniversary of the Subway Commonwealth Games will include Pickleball, Equestrian, Adult Kickball, Rock Climbing, Cycle Cross, Team Volleyball, Weightlifting and a Fitness Competition. The Games are also offering a new sport, Racquetball, to the veterans categories, expanding the list to six sports (bowling, shooting, track and field, 5K, archery and racquetball) as part of the continued partnership with the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, to honor and empower those that have served our country.

Main Games Weekend is July 18-20, which kicks off at the Roanoke Civic Center on Friday, July 18 at 4:30pm with the Grand Home Furnishings Athlete Tailgate Party including food provided by Subway, interactive games, music, prizes and more. Following at 7:30pm will be the traditional Opening Ceremonies, modeled after the Olympics, including a USA Olympic medal winner, Miss Virginia, fireworks, a BMX Bike performance, and the parade of athletes.

Since its inception in 1990, more than 210,000 athletes have competed in this annual multi-sport festival making it one of the most attended sporting events in the state.

Most of the sporting events will take place in the Roanoke, New River Valley, Lynchburg, Waynesboro, and Richmond areas, there are also events in Virginia Beach and Northern Virginia. The Subway Commonwealth Games is open to Virginia residents of all ages and abilities. Event organizers are planning for 10,000 athletes to compete this year.
