Individual Placement Description
All information to be completed by the LEP.
Placement / FY 1 General Medicine/ RespiratoryThe department / The gen med/ respiratory ward is one of the acute medical wards which receives
unselected acutely ill medical patients. It is a 30 bedded ward covered by 2
consultant physicians. The FY1 is supervised by the ST’s. With effect from August
the ward will have 2 CT1’s and 2 ST3’s on the regional rotation. The FY1 takes part in the regular
Consultant led ward rounds and oversees the day to day medical care of the patients.
A weekly chest meeting is organised for teaching.
The type of work to expect and learning opportunities / The FY1 is expected to gain experience in the day-to-day care of medical (mainly respiratory) patients. To gain a good understanding in the acute and longterm management of respiratory conditions which mainly include COPD and lung cancer. There is opportunity to present and teach at lunchtime meetings, as well as at Thursday evening MDTS, to attend outpatient clinics and bronchoscopy- where time permits absence from ward work.
You really can get as involved as you like. The consultants are happy to teach new skills wherever desired with opportunity to observe and carry out pleural taps and chest drains and even bronchoscopy as well as plenty of chance to carryout routine investigations and ABGs.
Oncalls in MAU are incorporated into your rota which provide juniors with experience in clerking and managing acute medical admissions.

Main duties of the placement / Day to day care of acutely ill medical patients under supervision. Chance to learn
procedures such as pleural aspiration, insertion of chest drains etc.

The hospital has 549 acute beds on the hospital site, excluding Mental illness, which is managed by the neighbouring Pennine Care Mental Health Trust.
