PEOPLE & CULTURE ADVISOR

About the Organisation

Nexus supports people with needs arising from intellectual, cognitive, physical and mental health issues. Our services include 24/7 supported independent living as well as a community and in-home supports.

Nexus employs over 180 staff on a permanent, part time and casual basis and supports over 100 clients. While operating for the past 20 years, the implementation of the NDIS has provided Nexus with the opportunity for rapid growth over the past 3 years.

FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the People and Culture Advisor will work closely with client service area managers to provide technical guidance, advice, support and recommendations on a range of generalist HR, employee relations and legislative issues. The role will also contribute to the continuous development of culture and positive work practices in a rapidly growing disability service through your engagement in a number of strategic projects.

While you will work under general direction from senior managers you will bring to the role a level of specialist skills and knowledge that will help Nexus achieve results in line with the organisation’s strategic goals.

You will work within a range of current HR work practices but exercise initiative and judgment where practices and direction are not clearly defined or no longer best practice.

Nexus also employs a Training Manager who is responsible for induction and ongoing training of staff. You will work closely with this person to ensure service areas maintain a supply of adequately selected and trained staff to meet client needs.

PRIMARY TASKS

Your primary role is to work within the philosophy of Nexus to achieve the highest possible standard of care and support for people with a disability.

You will work in partnership with service area managers to achieve their business and leadership objectives by providing support and assistance with HR planning and strategy to ensure Nexus achieves outcomes for our clients. Specifically, your key tasks will include:

·  Develop, plan and implement HR projects that will enhance the people experience of Nexus staff and clients.

·  Support service area managers

o  plan their medium to long term staffing needs and anticipate future demand;

o  to conduct selection and recruitment processes to the highest possible standards;

o  on a range of IR or HR issues with the support of external IR/HR consultants; and

o  to resolve issues as they arise relating to complaints, grievances and performance issues.

·  Work with the Manager Training to ensure a continuous supply of staff who are able and qualified to carry out a range of support roles.

·  Be self-motivated and able to set your own work priorities without direct daily supervision.

·  Maintain productive working relationships with external parties, including relevant unions and employer groups.

·  Support Nexus to comply with internal policy and procedures and all relevant laws impacting on the employment and management of staff, including workplace health and safety laws.

The key responsibilities may be modified from time to time to ensure that outcomes are coordinated with the objectives and needs of Nexus.

REQUIREMENTS

1.  Experience / Qualifications

·  It is preferred that the applicant will have tertiary qualifications in Human Resources or a related field.

·  Experience as a HR generalist, but looking towards a more senior HR/IR role.

2.  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·  Understanding of the Australian Industrial Relations System, EEO, Safety, Workers Compensation, Injury Management practices and principles as they apply within Tasmania.

·  Ability to clearly understand and adhere to Nexus policies and procedures.

·  An understanding of change management and developing culture in a growing organization

·  Demonstrated ability to use initiative, think laterally and strategically and work autonomously.

·  Demonstrated ability to develop business partnerships with all levels.

·  An ability to work effectively with people of all ages and at all levels to produce positive outcomes.


Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and a Working with Children Check.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL (SELECTION CRITERIA):

1.  Ability to relate to clients as participating members of society whilst respecting their level of knowledge and skill.

2.  Demonstrated knowledge and experience in contemporary HR practices.

3.  Excellent written and oral communications skills and the ability to work in a collaborative manner with other service areas. The ability to provide timely, accurate and convincing advice.

4.  Developed organisational skills including the ability to prioritise, set and keep timelines, provide lateral and innovative solutions to new and novel problems and work with minimal direct supervision.

5.  Demonstrated customer focus to provide a high level of support to service area managers.

6.  Demonstrated an understanding of how a positive approach to the rights of people with disabilities might affect your work.

SALARY SACRIFICE

Nexus holds a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) beneficial exemption. So long as this is retained Nexus shall provide all Employees with access to PBI salary sacrifice benefits up to the maximum allowed by the Australian Taxation Office for each Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year, which does not incur FBT. All salary sacrifice packaging must be done under an arrangement made prior to the actual salary sacrifice taking place and will be processed by an external organisation as nominated by the Employer at the Employee’s expense.
