Great Britain 16’s Boys – Tennis Europe Winter Cup Winners 2017

James Story (Tennis Wales player of the year) competed for Great Britain at the recent European Indoor Team event in Ronchin France.

Selected as part of a 3 player team, James anchored the doubles team winning every match in the finals. In the semi - final James and Harry came through a deciding rubber 11 – 9 in the match tie break silencing the vociferous home crowd of over 300 enthusiastic supporters and taking Great Britain into the finals where victory over Belgium saw them bring home the trophy.

Morgan Cross also gained selection for the 16’s girls team. The girls also qualified for the team finals and gained 5th place from a starting line - up of 25 European countries.

This was a fantastic performance where Morgan had the experience of walking out as the British Number 1 player and maintained 100% record in the doubles.

Winter National Tour Events have continued through February with some notable performances across the age groups.

Winter National Tour Finals 18’s Grade 1

Callum Findlay reached the quarter finals, beat Tad Maclean 6/3 6/1, lost 5/7 3/6 to eventual winner Hamish Stewart.

Tom Thelwall Jones reached the quarter finals, beat Kai Maxted 7/5 6/4, lost to Millen Hurion.

Winter National Tour Finals 14’s

Following a semi - final in Bolton Megan Davies reached the Q/F of the WNT Finals putting out 3rd seed Monica Raviraj 6/1 6/4, losing out to a much improved Charlotte Russell.

WNT 16’s Gosling

Danny Flynn and Megan Davies both fought through qualifying to join Llewelyn Bevan in the Main Draw.

Danny played a fantastic match to beat top seed Matthew Clegg 7/6 (5) 1/6 7/6 (6) losing out to Rahul Dhokia in the last 16.

Llewelyn Bevan played well to beat David Latter 6/1 6/2 losing out to Joshua Taylor 1/6 7/6 (5) 0/6

Megan Davies started well, but lost out 6/3 3/6 2/6 to Anna Buckley.

WNT 12’S Bath

7 boys gained acceptance into this event with 3 battling out the Main Draw

Jethro Dela Vega reached the quarter finals beating Rufus Plane 6/1 4/6 (10 – 4) with Rufus then going on to win the consolation, beating Alex Tikhonov who he had previously lost to 6/3 6/1. Following his win against Rufus, Jethro beat Jed Platts 6/2 7/5 then lost out to Raahim Agha 3/6 6/4 7-10.

A difficult first round saw Hugo Russell battle very well against eventual winner Finn Doyle losing out 3/6 3/6, then another difficult encounter against Wil Heard 7/6 3/6 (6 – 10)

In the girls event Nicole Kells also reached the quarter finals with victories over Ruby Hart 6/2 6/1, Ekua Youri 2/6 6/3 10 – 3, Isabelle Purser 3/6 3/6.

Aditi Chezhian beat Chantel Griffiths 6/1 6/0 to reach the round 16.

Iris Plane, Sofia Chivers, Elina Pickerd Barua and Rebecca Dow all competed in the qualifying which contributed to the highest ever representation from Wales in one age group.

Joe White continues his training in Barcelona and started 2017 with a 3 week tour to Kenya.

Joe played 10 matches during the trip with 3 wins to 3 loses in singles and a 1: 3 doubles ratio.

1st round beat HU and Lamble (USA) 6/4 6/3

2ND round beat Simon and Fallert (Ger) 7/5 7/5

Semi Final beat Clarke and Paufrey (GB) 6/2 6/2

Final lost Simon and Desein (France/Bel) 6/4 4/6 (7 – 10)

Evan Hoyt has had surgery on his shoulder which has gone well. While completing his rehab a bonus for many of the younger players Evan has been offering his expertise at some of the camps.

We wish him well and looking forward to seeing back competing.
