News from the Inside Track – April 2017

The arrival of spring sees us bid farewell to our winter warmers and hello to the longer and hopefully warmer days. There has been plenty of activity going on over the winter months and if you keep a regular eye on our website you will see that the club has had some worthy performances over the last few months. We welcome the following new members to the club- Tyler Brimacombe, Alfie Mair, Evie Morrison, Zara Summers, Jamie Thompson, Kane Webster, PJ Addison, Greig Cruickshank, Alison McGee and Rachel Paterson. We also welcome Laura Riddell as a Level 1 coach. Teresa, Alison and Neil are now ‘officially’ officials having finally completed the Health and Safety course which was postponed from last March.

2017 began with a windy but well attended Peterhead to Fraserburgh beach run. Well done to everyone who braved the elements. A total of £527 was raised for Macmillan.

Junior Cross Country took place over 6 venues – Fraserburgh, Banff, Haddo, Peterhead, Fyvie and Aden. Some of the routes were altered this year making it a real battle for the toughest and I’m pleased to say our juniors didn’t disappoint with placings for Becky Duncan 2nd P6, Ellie McGee 3rd P6 and Finley Collins 3rd P5.

Aberdeen AAC played host to several indoor meets which gave our athletes a chance to try and beat their personal bests in sprinting, shot putt, high jump and long jump. Several indoor club records were also broken: Finley Collins (60m 10.66), Bailey Watt (60m 9.2, SP 6.47), Ellie McGee (60m 10.54, LJ 3.40, SP2K 4.09) and Ailsa Hood (60m 11.16). Full list of club records can be found on our website with the current junior records on the last page.

Our senior members continue to impress with their performances in road races – their training certainly seems to be paying off.

Once again our Indoor decathlon for juniors proved to be a popular event with over 20 youngsters undertaking a variety of events like speed bounce, standing long jump, balance beam and target throw. Everyone taking part got a certificate with their step achieved, a medal and a crème egg. Well done to top performer Bailey Watt who reached Silver level.

Looking ahead to the summer season there are plenty opportunities to participate in a variety of athletics events. For track and field lovers we will once again be entering a joint Phd/Ellon team into the RAM athletics league (Grampian League). There is also a full programme of OGM at Aberdeen throughout the summer – ideal for those looking for some competition experience. Our own Mundies Challenges – 5K for seniors, 1K or 2K for juniors is a monthly time trial roughly every 4 weeks taking place April – October. Our Club Championships will take place on Saturday 2nd Sept with some events taking place the previous Thursday.

We continue to push hard for repair and maintenance to the facilities at Catto Park. Progress is slow with the council unwilling to part with money until a decision is made on the site of the new community campus. At the time of writing it is hoped that sector markings for the field will be in place, a replacement toe board for shot putt installed and netting installed for the throwing cage. We were under the impression that some sort of barrier would be in place by the start of the year to replace the hedging that was removed last year however this has not happened. Be assured that we are actively campaigning to get fencing installed – which should limit the number of trespassers during training sessions.

Please check out our website for forthcoming events as well as results from previous events.

Blast from the past

Sandy Hastie is now coaching the youngsters at the track on a Tuesday. Back in February 1996, Sandy was running the National cross-country championships at Irvine where he finished 263rd in the Senior race. Other Hasties running on that day were Alexander Hastie, under 13 boys, who finished 3rd behind Andrew Lemoncello (who ran for Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 3,000m steeplechase). Also Deborah Hastie, under 15 girls who finished 7th, 90s ahead of Aberdeen’s Nicola Gauld (now regularly wins 10k in 35/36min). Other Peterhead runners on that day were Diane McLatchie (43rd in U15G), Lee Buchan (38th U15B), and Sandy Ingram (403rd sen).
