Mr. Gronich
Advanced Placement Human Geography (APHuG)
2017-2018

AP Human Geography (APHuG) is a college level course. The textbook and the workload are comparable to an introductory undergraduate course at a college or university. AP Human Geography’sintended outcome is to preparestudents for AP Examination inMay 2018. To maintain this pace students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the material and learn the skills necessary to be successful on the AP Exam.

Viera High School expects seriousness of purpose and diligence throughout the school year from all students who enroll in APHuG. The class schedule is designed cover one section of the text per week. The reading material in this course is college level and requires a minimum obligation of about 30 minutes or more each night. Students must be able to read scholarly writing quickly and comprehensively. It is expected that students will write college level essays that presents evidence of conceptual and critical thinking. Students should expect a demanding workload in preparation for the APHuG Examination in May of 2018.

The nature of Human Geography, as a college level course, deals with controversial topics i.e. population, politics, economics, religion, culture, migration etc. It is essential students show maturity when addressing these topics and respect differing opinions of classmates.
College credit is given only if the exam is passed. Because of these higher requirements, grades given in this class are worth more when calculating a student’s grade point average (GPA) than in a standard class. For example, a grade of ‘B’ in a standard class is assigned a GPA of 3.0. In an AP class the GPA is weighted a full point higher, to 4.0.Students can earn up to a 5.0 This is beneficial to students when colleges begin to examine their transcripts.

The purpose of this contract is to clarify with specificity class expectations and to receive from students and their parents an explicit acceptance of responsibilities and commitment to fulfill them.
