Job title:Communications Advisor - China

Reporting to:Deputy Director of Communications

Location:London or Hong Kong

Job purpose:

To design and deliver strategic communications support for all Global Witness public-facing work in China to raise the organisation’s profile, particularly media reach, and increase our impact.

Key Responsibilities

●Work with the communications advisors and the Asia-based China team members to design and deliver effective communications strategies around key moments, drafting audience-appropriate messaging, creating media and social media materials, pitching stories, delivering influential media coverage, stimulating debate in media and social media.

●Keep Global Witness staff up-to-date with key trends and changes in the Chinese media landscape and adapt strategy as appropriate. Keep abreast of Chinese public opinion and newsworthy issues to ensure high impact framing of messages.

●Help build relationships for the organisation with key journalists, commentators and other public mobilisers as appropriate.

●Spot China-related hooks and opportunities that Global Witness could react to in order to help forward our programmatic goals, and help keep the Global Witness planner up to date.

●Help monitor and evaluate communications activity and contribute to organisational and team evaluation.

●Help protect the reputation of Global Witness, monitoring for and highlighting both risks and opportunities, implementing crisis management media strategies as required.

●Deliver high quality output in line with Global Witness’s style and brand.

●Oversee high quality translation of Chinese language materials.

Person Specification

Essential:

●Excellent understanding of the Chinese communications context and trends.

●Proven evidence of delivering successful strategic communications strategies in China, and knowledge of how strategic communications can contribute to advocacy campaigns.

●Excellent media contacts and understanding of traditional and digital Chinese media environment.

●Strong editorial judgment and understanding of different Chinese audiences, content, media formats.

●Sharp news sense and demonstrable ability to create, pitch and deliver news.

●Excellent writing and/or broadcast skills, including the ability to summarise complex data and make it accessible to mainstream and social media.

●Strong planning and project management skills.

●Sound experience of news management, including identifying issues which involve reputational risk.

●Demonstrable ability to meet deadlines and prioritise when working under pressure on a number of projects.

●Strong leadership and interpersonal qualities, including experience of inspiring, negotiating and working with NGO colleagues to deliver excellent strategies and communications.

●Commitment to Global Witness’s mission, values and approach

●Fluent written and spoken Mandarin and English

Desirable:

●Knowledge of international development, human rights, the environment, natural resources, corruption and/or transparency.

●Ability to travel
