Bartholomew and the Oobleck Activity Observation Sheet

Group Activity: What are properties of a Liquid and Solid?

Discuss as a class the properties of a liquid and solid. Write properties of each in the Venn diagram below. If it is a property of both liquids and solids write that in the overlapping center.

Activity 1: How much Space does Oobleck take up?

Materials

250 ml water (approximately 1 cup)

500 ml cornstarch

Green food coloring (optional)

2 containers of different sizes (graduated cylinder and beaker if available)

Steps

Step 1: Make the Oobleck by mixing water and cornstarch in a large beaker.

Step 2: Draw the Oobleck in the beaker in the left box and color in how much space it takes up.

Step 3: Record the VOLUME of the Oobleck in the beaker.

Step 4: Draw a graduated cylinder in the right box and color in your prediction for how much space it will take up.

Step 3: Transfer the Oobleck to a graduated cylinder.

Step 5: Record the VOLUME of the Oobleck in the graduated cylinder.

Activity 2: Does it Sink or Float?

Materials

Prepared Oobleck from Activity 1

Paper clip

Confetti

Marble/rock

Toothpick, String

Steps

Step 1: Obtain the prepared Oobleck and gather the materials listed above.

Step 2: Record your predictions in the table below for each item. Will it float or will it sink?

Step 3: Take one of the items and observe how it reacts in the Oobleck.

Step 4: Record if the item floats on the Oobleck or sinks in it in the table below.

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all items.
